USSR's old domain name attracts cybercriminals

MOSCOW (AP) ? The Soviet Union disappeared from the map more than two decades ago. But online an 'e-vil empire' is thriving.

Security experts say the .su Internet suffix assigned to the USSR in 1990 has turned into a haven for hackers who've flocked to the defunct superpower's domain space to send spam and steal money.

Capitalist concerns, rather than Communist nostalgia, explain the move.

"I don't think that this is really a political thing," Oren David, a manager at security firm RSA's anti-fraud unit, said in a recent telephone interview. David noted that other obscure areas of the Internet, such as the .tk domain associated with the South Pacific territory of Tokelau, have been used by opportunistic hackers.

"It's all about business," he said.

David and others say scammers began to move to .su after the administrators of Russia's .ru space toughened their rules back in late 2011.

Group-IB, which runs one of Russia's two official Internet watchdogs, says that the number of malicious websites hosted across the Soviet Union's old domain doubled in 2011 and doubled again in 2012, surpassing even the vast number of renegade sites on .ru and its newer Cyrillic-language counterpart.

The Soviet domain has "lots of problems," Group-IB's Andrei Komarov said in a phone interview. "In my opinion more than half of cybercriminals in Russia and former USSR use it."

The most notorious site was Exposed.su, which purportedly published credit records belonging to President Barack Obama's wife, Michelle, Republican presidential challengers Mitt Romney and Donald Trump, and celebrities including Britney Spears, Jay Z, Beyonce and Tiger Woods. The site is now defunct.

Other Soviet sites are used to control botnets ? the name given to the networks of hijacked computers used by criminals to empty bank accounts, crank out spam, or launch attacks against rival websites.

Internet hosting companies generally eliminate such sites as soon as they're identified. But Swiss security researcher Roman Huessy, whose abuse.ch blog tracks botnet control sites, said hackers based in Soviet cyberspace can operate with impunity for months at a time.

Asked for examples, he rattled off a series of sites actively involved in ransacking bank accounts or holding hard drives hostage in return for ransom ? brazenly working in the online equivalent of broad daylight.

"I can continue posting this list for ages," he said via Skype.

The history of .su goes back to the early days of the Internet, when its architects were creating the universe of country code suffixes meant to mark out a website's nationality. Each code ? like .fr for France or .ca for Canada ? was meant to correspond to a country.

Some Cold War-era domain names ? such as .yu for Yugoslavia or .dd for East Germany ? evaporated after the countries behind them disappeared. But the .su domain survived the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the creation of a .ru domain in 1994, resisting repeated attempts to wipe it from the Web because, unlike other defunct domains, those behind .su refused to pull the plug ? on both commercial and patriotic grounds.

With more than 120,000 domains currently registered, mothballing .su now would be a messy operation.

"It's like blocking .com or .org," said Komarov. "Lots of legitimate domains are registered there."

Among them are stalin.su, which eulogizes the Soviet dictator and the English-language chronicle.su, an absurdist parody site.

But experts say many are fraudulent, and even the organization behind .su accepts it has a problem on its hands.

"We realize it's a threat for our image," said Sergei Ovcharenko, whose Moscow-based nonprofit Foundation for Internet Development took responsibility for .su in 2007.

Ovcharenko insisted that only a small number of .su sites are malicious, although he acknowledged that criminal sites can stay online for extremely long periods of time. He said his hands were tied by weak Russian legislation and outdated terms of service. But he promised that stricter rules are on their way after months of legal leg work.

"We are almost there," he said. "This summer, we'll be rolling out our new policy."

Meanwhile .su has become an increasingly notorious corner of the Internet, an online echo of the evil empire moniker assigned to the Soviet Union by U.S. President Ronald Reagan 30 years ago.

David, the RSA manager, said the emergence of a Communist relic as a 21st century security threat was a bizarre blast from the past.

"I thought that the Berlin Wall and my grandma's borscht are the only remnants of the Soviet Union," he said. "I was wrong."

U.S. senator McCain pictured with Syrian rebel kidnapper: paper

BEIRUT (Reuters) - U.S. Senator John McCain was photographed during a trip to Syria with a man implicated in the kidnapping by Syrian rebels of 11 Lebanese Shi'ite pilgrims a year ago, a Lebanese newspaper said on Thursday.

McCain, a Republican, has been an outspoken advocate for U.S. military aid to the rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad and made a short, highly publicised trip to meet rebel commanders in Syria three days ago.

He has insisted that the United States could locate the "right people" to help among rebel ranks infiltrated with radicalised Islamists.

However, he may have crossed paths with men linked to a group notorious in the region for kidnapping the pilgrims, the Daily Star said.

The paper said that as well as McCain's photographs with rebel commanders, one image showed the face of Mohammad Nour - identified by two freed hostages as the chief spokesman and photographer for the Northern Storm brigade that kidnapped them.

The image demonstrates the difficulty of identifying who the West might want to deal with and could possibly further inflame the delicate sectarian balance in a conflict that is spilling over Lebanon's borders.

A spokesman for McCain said none of the people he met identified themselves as Nour and it had not been his intention to meet anyone of that name.

"A number of the Syrians who greeted Senator McCain upon his arrival in Syria asked to take pictures with him, and as always, the senator complied. If the individual photographed with Senator McCain is in fact Mohammad Nour, that is regrettable," spokesman Brian Rogers said.

"But it would be ludicrous to suggest that the senator in any way condones the kidnapping of Lebanese Shia pilgrims or has any communication with those responsible. Senator McCain condemns such heinous actions in the strongest possible terms."

The hostages were seized in northern Syria as they returned from a pilgrimage in Iran. Lebanese officials flew to Turkey on Thursday in the latest effort to secure the release of the remaining nine hostages.

McCain has denounced Democratic President Barack Obama for shying away from deeper involvement in the conflict. The uprising-turned-civil war has become increasingly bloody and has claimed more than 80,000 in over two years of conflict.

"The senator believes his visit to Syria was critical to supporting the many brave Syrians who are fighting for their lives and the freedom of their country against a brutal regime and its foreign allies that are massacring Syrian citizens on Syrian territory," the spokesman said.

Wrestling leader confident of IOC reprieve

President of International wrestling federation Nenad Lalovic speaks during a news conference after the extraordinary federation congress, in Moscow, Russia, on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Wrestling's governing body is pinning its hopes of keeping the sport in the Olympics after 2016 on rule changes designed to make matches more exciting and easier to understand. The federation, known by the acronym FILA, is also changing its constitution to include a female vice president and will increase the number of women's weight classes if it remains in the Olympics. President of International wrestling federation Nenad Lalovic speaks during a news conference after the extraordinary federation congress, in Moscow, Russia, on Saturday, May 18, 2013. (AP) ? As the man leading wrestling's charge to preserve its Olympic status, Nenad Lalovic believes he's done what it takes.

Three months after wrestling was surprisingly dropped from the 2020 Games, Lalovic will present a new-look sport and revamped governing body to the IOC on Wednesday in a bid to keep its Olympic place.

"I'm confident," Lalovic, the new president of international federation FILA, said Tuesday. "A lot of people say to me, 'Oh, you won't face any problem here.' But we'll see. We did everything we could. Nothing else was possible.

"We will continue, no matter what we will be decided here. It's a new sport."

Wrestling is competing against seven other sports for a single opening on the 2020 lineup. The others are a combined baseball-softball bid, karate, roller sports, sport climbing, squash, wakeboarding and the Chinese martial art of wushu.

The federations will make closed-door presentations to the IOC executive board, which will decide which sport or sports to recommend to the IOC general assembly for a final vote Sept. 8 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The IOC board will likely select three or four finalists. Wrestling, squash and karate have been cited as strong contenders. Men's baseball and women's softball, which have been off the program since the 2008 Beijing Games, have merged into a single federation to improve their chances.

The addition of wrestling to the mix has not gone over well with all the sports, who feel that it is overshadowing the contest and reducing their own chances. If wrestling is reinstated in September, that will defeat the IOC's original goal of bringing in a new sport.

Lalovic, a Serb who replaced Switzerland's Raphael Martinetti as FILA president, isn't concerned about the plight of the other sports.

"They are a little bit surprised," he said. "They had two years to prepare. We had three months. We are here because we were not good enough. They have to think about their sport. We don't think about their sport. We think about our sport, and we prepare ourselves without watching what's going on around us."

Wrestling, a sport with a tradition dating to the ancient Olympics, has gone through a major upheaval since it was dropped by the IOC in February. Lalovic was elected FILA president, women and athletes were brought into decision-making roles, and the sport adopted a series of rule changes designed to make wrestling more fan-friendly and easier to understand.

Among the changes, matches will consist of two 3-minute sessions instead of three 2-minute periods, and scoring will be cumulative instead of the previous best-of-three system.

"We had the strength to change," Lalovic said of his message to the IOC. "We already did and we will continue. We made mistakes in the past, for sure. Now we are looking forward. We don't look back."

Among the countries in which the decision will be watched closely is the United States, where wrestling has a strong Olympic tradition and 300,000 high school students compete in the sport.

"The Olympic Games is the ultimate stamp of legitimacy on your sport," USA Wrestling executive director Rich Bender said in St. Petersburg on Tuesday. "You talk to young wresters all over the world, and they'll say the same thing. What's their goal? Their goal is to be Olympic champion. I'm not sure that's the same with all the other sports."

The issue is also being followed by the three cities bidding to host the 2020 Games ? Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo. Bid leaders from the three candidates are in St. Petersburg to make presentations Thursday at the SportAccord Convention. Wrestling is particularly popular in Turkey and Japan.

"It is important for Turkey because of our success and because it is a national sport," Istanbul bid leader Hasan Arat said Tuesday. "But this is an IOC board decision, which we have to respect. I see lots of changes in wrestling, and I hope wrestling will remain in the games."

Nike cuts ties to Livestrong

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Nike, which helped build Lance Armstrong's Livestrong cancer charity into a global brand and introduced its familiar yellow wristband, is cutting ties with the foundation in the latest fallout from the former cyclist's doping scandal.

The move by the sports shoe and clothing company ends a nine-year relationship that helped the foundation raise more than $100 million and made the charity's bracelet an international symbol for cancer survivors.

But the relationship soured with revelations of performance-enhancing drug use by Armstrong and members of his U.S. Postal Service team.

Nike dropped its personal sponsorship of Armstrong last October after U.S. Anti-Doping Agency exposed the team doping program and portrayed Armstrong as its ringleader. And after years of denials, Armstrong admitted earlier this year he used performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France seven times.

Officials at Livestrong, which announced the split on Tuesday, said the foundation remains strong and committed to helping cancer patients worldwide through its survivorship programs.

Armstrong, who started the charity in 1997 as the Lance Armstrong Foundation, was pushed off the board of directors in October and the organization later changed its formal name to Livestrong.

In a statement, Livestrong officials said the foundation is "deeply grateful" to Nike.

"Together, we created new, revolutionary ways of thinking about how non-profits fuel their mission and we're proud of that," the foundation said.

A Nike spokesman did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.

Armstrong declined comment, noting he no longer has a relationship with Livestrong or Nike.

Livestrong officials say the charity remains on solid financial ground.

"This news will prompt some to jump to negative conclusions about the foundation's future. We see things quite differently. We expected and planned for changes like this and are therefore in a good position to adjust swiftly and move forward with our patient-focused work," the foundation said.

The foundation said it reduced its budget nearly 11 percent in 2013 to $38.4 million, but said Tuesday that revenue is already 2.5 percent ahead of projections. The foundation also noted that last month, it received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, which evaluates charities based on financial health, accountability and transparency.

Diamonds, nanotubes find common ground in graphene

May 28, 2013 ? What may be the ultimate heat sink is only possible because of yet another astounding capability of graphene. The one-atom-thick form of carbon can act as a go-between that allows vertically aligned carbon nanotubes to grow on nearly anything.

That includes diamonds. A diamond film/graphene/nanotube structure was one result of new research carried out by scientists at Rice University and the Honda Research Institute USA, reported today in Nature's online journal Scientific Reports.

The heart of the research is the revelation that when graphene is used as a middleman, surfaces considered unusable as substrates for carbon nanotube growth now have the potential to do so. Diamond happens to be a good example, according to Rice materials scientist Pulickel Ajayan and Honda chief scientist Avetik Harutyunyan.

Diamond conducts heat very well, five times better than copper. But its available surface area is very low. By its very nature, one-atom-thick graphene is all surface area. The same could be said of carbon nanotubes, which are basically rolled-up tubes of graphene. A vertically aligned forest of carbon nanotubes grown on diamond would disperse heat like a traditional heat sink, but with millions of fins. Such an ultrathin array could save space in small microprocessor-based devices.

"Further work along these lines could produce such structures as patterned nanotube arrays on diamond that could be utilized in electronic devices," Ajayan said. Graphene and metallic nanotubes are also highly conductive; in combination with metallic substrates, they may also have uses in advanced electronics, he said.

To test their ideas, the Honda team grew various types of graphene on copper foil by standard chemical vapor deposition. They then transferred the tiny graphene sheets to diamond, quartz and other metals for further study by the Rice team.

They found that only single-layer graphene worked well, and sheets with ripples or wrinkles worked best. The defects appeared to capture and hold the airborne iron-based catalyst particles from which the nanotubes grow. The researchers think graphene facilitates nanotube growth by keeping the catalyst particles from clumping.

Ajayan thinks the extreme thinness of graphene does the trick. In a previous study, the Rice lab found graphene shows materials coated with graphene can get wet, but the graphene provides protection against oxidation. "That might be one of the big things about graphene, that you can have a noninvasive coating that keeps the property of the substrate but adds value," he said. "Here it allows the catalytic activity but stops the catalyst from aggregating."

Testing found that the graphene layer remains intact between the nanotube forest and the diamond or other substrate. On a metallic substrate like copper, the entire hybrid is highly conductive.

Such seamless integration through the graphene interface would provide low-contact resistance between current collectors and the active materials of electrochemical cells, a remarkable step toward building high-power energy devices, said Rice research scientist and co-author Leela Mohana Reddy Arava.

Co-authors of the study are Honda senior scientists Rahul Rao and Gugang Chen; Rice graduate student Kaushik Kalaga; Masahiro Ishigami, an assistant professor of physics at the University of Central Florida; and Tony Heinz, the D.M. Rickey Professor of Physics at Columbia University. Ajayan is the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and of chemistry at Rice.

The research was supported by the Honda Research Institute.

(AP Photo/Ted S. Warren, File)

(AP) ? Robbie Rogers is back where he feels he belongs and is most comfortable. On a soccer field playing the game he's loved since he was a boy. Now that he has revealed the long kept secret that he is gay, he's ready to move on and put the focus on resuming his career.

Rogers made history on Sunday night when he became the first openly gay male athlete to play in a U.S. professional league, making his Major League Soccer debut with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"I guess this is a historic thing, but for me it was just a soccer game," he said.

The team made it easy on the 26-year-old midfielder by building a 4-0 lead over the Seattle Sounders by the time he entered as a substitute in the 77th minute.

"No pressure at all coming in," Rogers said. "I got to totally enjoy myself and take it all in."

He received loud cheers from the crowd of 24,811 as he ran onto the pitch, with fans chanting his last name. Rogers' family, including his grandparents, and friends were in the stands.

He ran by teammate Landon Donovan, who slapped his hand and patted him on the back as he took his position.

"Because of the nature of the way sports has been for so many years ? the macho culture that's been embraced by everybody ? it's of interest to everybody," Donovan said. "Now, hopefully, the hype about it is over and he can get back to being a soccer player, which is what he wants to do."

Rogers had five touches, one tackle and three completed passes in the game's final 13 minutes. He hadn't played professionally since last year. He spent the last two seasons in England.

Rogers retired from the sport in February, when he revealed in a post on his blog that he is gay. He has been training with the Galaxy since April at the invitation of coach Bruce Arena.

"I'm back here kind of where I'm supposed to be," he said, nattily attired in a blue suit with a white shirt buttoned to the neck and gold tie bar befitting his interest in fashion.

"It's crazy to me to think I stepped away from this game at 25," he said. "I'll sit in my bed tonight and thank God gave me the courage to do this and come back."

Rogers' signing on Saturday was so recent that he wasn't listed in the game day program, which featured a picture of Mike Magee in the centerfold. Magee, the Galaxy's leading scorer and a fan favorite, was traded to his hometown Chicago Fire, which held Rogers' MLS rights.

"In a lot of ways the easy part is over," Arena said. "Now the difficult part remains, which is getting him positioned to play. Our expectations for Robbie are not anything big in the near future. Hopefully, he'll get back to the way we think he can be."

Rogers has the support of his teammates, who understand how much he wants to regain the form that once earned him a spot on the U.S. national team.

"I'm sure he's delighted to get that off his back," said Galaxy captain Robbie Keane, who had his first career three-goal game in MLS. "It's time for him to concentrate on just being part of this team."

Seattle coach Sigi Schmid, who once coached the Galaxy, sought out Rogers for a supportive pre-game hug. The two men have known each other since Rogers was 7.

"When he came out and said he was going to retire from playing, I sent him a text and said, 'Don't retire from playing because you came out. If you want to play, you should play. You'll be accepted,'" Schmid said.

But it took time for Rogers to decide he wanted to accept Arena's offer to train with the Galaxy. Eventually, he knew he wanted to resume his career with the team located not far from his hometown of Huntington Beach.

Arena cautioned that Rogers needs time to regain his fitness and skill level.

"As a player he can't be judged tonight or the next couple weeks," the coach said. "It's way too early. He's got a way to go. We'll be patient with him."

Nerves began getting the best of Rogers in the hours before he left home for the stadium. Not because he was worried about the prospect of being the first openly gay male athlete to play, but because his soccer skills were rusty.

"I was like, 'Oh gosh,'" he said.

He called his sister for reassurance.

"I just needed to hear someone's voice," Rogers said. "We were talking about my dog. Just get my mind off things."

Schmid believes that in time Rogers' sexuality won't be a story anymore.

"It doesn't matter if you have a gay player on your team, it doesn't matter if you have a Jewish player on your team, it doesn't matter if you have a Baptist on your team," he said. "I think we're becoming more cognizant that it takes all sorts of people to make this world go round, and we're a lot more accepting of that."

Rogers isn't sure what awaits him as the Galaxy heads out on a five-game road trip, and he is held up as a role model.

"This is a learning process for me," he said. "I would ask these people to remember I'm human as well. I'll try to be a good person through this whole process."

Rockets hit south Beirut after Hezbollah vows Syria victory

By Dominic Evans

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Two rockets hit a Shi'ite Muslim district of southern Beirut on Sunday and wounded several people, residents said, a day after the leader of Lebanese Shi'ite militant movement Hezbollah said his group would continue fighting in Syria until victory.

It was the first attack to apparently target Hezbollah's stronghold in the south of the Lebanese capital since the outbreak of the two-year conflict in neighboring Syria, which has sharply heightened Lebanon's own sectarian tensions.

One rocket landed in a car sales yard next to a busy road junction in the Chiah neighborhood and the other hit an apartment several hundred meters away, wounding five people, residents said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Brigadier Selim Idris, head of Syria's Western-backed rebel military command, told Al-Arabiya Television that his forces had not carried out the attack and urged rebels to keep their conflict inside Syria.

But another Syrian rebel, Ammar al-Wawi, told Lebanon's LBC Television the attack was a warning to authorities in Beirut to restrain Hezbollah. "In coming days we will do more than this. This is a warning to Hezbollah, and the Lebanese government to keep Hezbollah's hands off Syria," he said.

A Lebanese security source said three rocket launchers were found, one of which had misfired or failed to launch, in hills to the southeast of the Lebanese capital, about 5 miles from the area where the two rockets landed.

The rocket strikes came hours after Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, a powerful supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said his fighters were committed to the conflict whatever the cost.

"We will continue to the end of the road. We accept this responsibility and will accept all sacrifices and expected consequences of this position," he said in a televised speech on Saturday evening. "We will be the ones who bring victory".

Syria's two-year uprising has polarized Lebanon, with Sunni Muslims supporting the rebellion against Assad and Shi'ite Hezbollah and its allies standing by Assad. The Lebanese city of Tripoli has seen frequent explosions of violence between majority Sunnis and its small Alawite community.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius condemned the violence in Lebanon. "The war in Syria must not become the war in Lebanon," he told reporters in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Kuwait, which like several Gulf states warned its nationals last year against visiting Lebanon, urged any citizens in Lebanon to leave and reiterated its advice not travel there.

QUSAIR OFFENSIVE

Until recently, Nasrallah insisted that Hezbollah had not sent guerrillas to fight alongside Assad's forces, but in his speech on Saturday he said it was fighting in Syria to defend Lebanon from radical Islamists now leading Syria's rebellion.

Hezbollah forces and Assad's troops launched a fierce assault last week aimed at driving Syrian rebels out of Qusair, a strategic town close to the Lebanese border which rebels have used as a supply route for weapons coming into the country.

Lebanese authorities, haunted by Lebanon's own 1975-1990 civil war and torn by the same sectarian rifts as its powerful neighbor, have sought to pursue a police of "dissociation" from the Syrian turmoil.

But they are unable to prevent the flow into Syria of Sunni Muslim gunmen who support the rebels and Hezbollah fighters who support Assad, and have struggled to absorb nearly half a million refugees coming the other way to escape the fighting.

At least 25 people have been killed in Tripoli in the north of Lebanon over the last week in street fighting which has been partly triggered by the battle for Qusair across the border.

Nasrallah's speech was condemned by Sunni Muslim former Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri, who said that Hezbollah, set up by Iran in the 1980s to fight Israeli occupation forces in south Lebanon, had abandoned anti-Israeli "resistance" in favor of sectarian conflict in Syria.

"The resistance is ending by your hand and your will," Hariri said in a statement. "The resistance announced its political and military suicide in Qusair".

Hariri is backed by Saudi Arabia, which along with other Sunni Muslim Gulf Arab monarchies has strongly supported the uprising against Iranian-backed Assad, whose minority Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

In Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, residents said three rockets landed on Sunday close to the mainly Shi'ite border town of Hermel, without causing injuries. Rebels have targeted Hermel from inside Syria several times in recent weeks.

Embattled IRS makes debut in House GOP attack ads

A House Republican group is launching an ad campaign against four incumbent Democrats this week that aims to tie the lawmakers to the Internal Revenue Service, a government agency under scrutiny after officials admitted earlier this month to targeting conservative groups applying for nonprofit status.

The National Republican Congressional Committee will dispatch thousands of trucks to drive around the districts of Democratic Reps. Ann Kirkpatrick and Ron Barber of Arizona, Collin Peterson of Minnesota and John Barrow of Georgia on Tuesday with versions of this billboard:

NRCC ad against Rep. John Barrow of Georgia.

Under the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010, and which will be fully implemented next year, the tax collecting agency is tasked with implementing and enforcing many of the key provisions.

Although the ad doesn't mention that the IRS placed increased scrutiny on conservative organizations that applied for nonprofit status between 2010-2012, the message about the health care law is likely to resonate with voters who have heard only negative news about the agency in recent weeks.

The NRCC declined to say how much it was paying for the mobile billboards.

How to Control Your Android Without Looking at It

It's getting dangerous just to walk and text at the same time much less do so behind the wheel of a car. But with Siri being just slightly less helpful than HAL, how are you supposed to surf the web and simultaneously travel safely? All you have to do is ask.

Become a Dictator: With touchscreen displays quickly becoming the norm for mobile devices, you have little choice but to look at what you're typing since you can't feel your way across the keyboard. But rather than try to split your attention between driving and typing, have your phone write it for you.

Send yourself a reminder note by tapping the mic icon and prefacing the message with, "Note to self." Gmail will deliver both the audio message and a transcription of it to your inbox. You can dictate outgoing emails as well, though it requires a few steps.

First tap the mic icon and say "send email." Next identify the recipient by saying "To [the contact name]", then state the subject of the email using "Subject: [whatever the email is about]", and finally input the message itself with the "Message" command and speaking the punctuation marks. Altogether it would sound something like this, "Send email to tips@gizmodo.com, subject a hot tip, message have I got a tip for you exclamation point." And for SMS texts, you only have to say "send text to" followed by the recipient and the message.

Get Directions: Whether you have someone riding shotgun or not, there's no reason for you to pull double duty as both driver and navigator. Instead, offload direction duties to Google Maps' navigation feature. Tap the microphone icon on the Google Search bar and say "Navigate to [your destination]" for turn-by-turn dictation, "Directions to [your destination]" for written instructions, or "Map of [your location]" for a basic map of the area. Unfortunately, "Take me to [Funkytown]" is not a valid command.

Get a Forecast: Sudden downpours are murder on a convertible's interior. Don't risk getting drenched waiting for the next radio weather report, simply ask your phone "What is the chance of rain today in [your location]." Google Search will read the current weather conditions aloud. You can also query it for a five-day forecast of any locale worldwide.

Refuel: The fuel warning light has been on for way too long now and unless you want to push your ride the rest of the way, you'd better find a gas station?fast. Luckily, all you have to do is ask, "Where is the nearest gas station?" and Google Search will pop a list of options with directions to each. They may not be the cheapest available (oh but to have that search feature) but any gas is better than running on fumes.

Now that you've found fuel for your ride, it's time to do the same for yourself. Tap the mic icon and say, "nearby restaurants" for a list of local eateries. You can also specify by cuisine ("nearby diners") or chain ("where's the nearest Taco Bell?").

Discover: Can't quite remember what that catchy tune is that's playing over the gas station's PA system? If you don't have the Sound Search app handy, you can still access the function through the search bar. Tap the mic icon, ask "what's this song," and hold your phone up to a speaker.

Once it names that tune, Search will pop a purchase link as well. And it's not just Sound Search, you can also quickly access Goggles functions without opening the app itself by using verbal commands. Tell your phone to, "scan a barcode" to do just that. It works for both linear and QR codes.

While these commands are handy when you're behind the wheel, they're by no means a complete list. Check out more helpful verbal cues here.

(AP) ? Anchorage police say they have identified a suspect in the beating deaths of a couple and the sexual assault of their great-grandchild.

Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz (SLAHV'-oh-meer MARK'-eh-witz) says the suspect is 24-year-old Jerry Andrew Active.

Active was arrested about a block from an apartment where the bodies of 71-year-old Touch Chea and his wife, 73-year-old Sorn Sreap, were found Saturday night by their granddaughter, who had returned from a trip to a movie with her husband and 4-year-old son.

The couple found their home locked from the inside.

They broke in through a window and discovered the bodies and a naked man with their toddler in a bedroom.

Markiewicz says they tried to detain the man but he fled.

Police say both Sreap and the toddler had been sexually assaulted.

Fast & Furious 6: Made for fans

Fast & Furious 6 will delight fans of the franchise, because there is more of everything. But as a movie, Fast & Furious 6 gets two out of four stars.

By Jocelyn Noveck,?Associated Press / May 25, 2013

Ever wonder what it would feel like to suddenly wake up in another universe?

You could find out, perhaps, by joining the next space mission to another galaxy, or, slightly easier, you could go to your local multiplex and watch "Fast & Furious 6" without having seen the first five movies.

Should you decide to undertake this anthropological experiment, you'd immediately discover there are things everyone except you already knows. For example: jokes about baby oil and big foreheads are very funny in this universe. Cars, of course, are the most important thing, and of course there are no speed limits. Weapons come next on the list, and the bigger the better ? but in one-on-one physical combat, bald heads are surprisingly effective. Speaking of those fights: They're brutal, yet somehow, no organs get damaged and even bruises are minimal.

And oh yes, bikinis and bottoms are important. Not bikini bottoms ? well, those too ? but bottoms in bikinis. What this has to do with car racing is not entirely clear.

Most importantly, in this universe, there is no such thing as "less is more." More is always more, and so, "Fast & Furious 6" will delight fans of the franchise, because there is more of everything here. Director Justin Lin gives us not only great cars doing ridiculous things at ridiculous speeds, but also a huge army tank and a great stunt involving a giant cargo plane.

Newcomers will be a little confused as to who everyone is, since there is little explanation at this point, but fans will be glad to know their favorites are back, starting with Vin Diesel's Dom, the hotshot driver with the clean-shaven head (the better to butt other heads with) and a strong sense of family. When we first see him, he's careening down a winding cliff road in the Canary Islands with cohort/former cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker). Turns out they're heading to the hospital, where O'Conner's wife (and Dom's sister), Mia (Jordana Brewster, in a small role this time) is giving birth. A sweet family moment.

Meanwhile, Dom, on the lam from the U.S. and hugely wealthy from his last venture, is shacked up in a sunny love nest with a gorgeous Brazilian cop (Elsa Pataky). Who needs to work? That's what he tells Hobbs, the insanely buff federal agent played by Dwayne Johnson, when he comes calling, a nemesis from the last film who's now promising immunity in exchange for Dom's help. He wants Dom to nab a villain named Shaw (Luke Evans) ? he's the snarly guy with the tank and the plane and a huge military arsenal which is one little component short of wreaking total havoc.

A reluctant Dom gets on board when he learns that Letty, his former love (Michelle Rodriguez) is working for Shaw. But wait ... wasn't she dead? Well, actually she's alive, but she has amnesia. Anyway, the game is on.

Happily, amid all the noise, the races ? there's a terrific one through the streets of downtown London ? the crashes and the outlandish stunts, there is some humor, and it's very welcome. Particularly funny are Tyrese Gibson as Roman and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges as Tej, Dom's partners in crime. Also back for more adventures are the attractive duo of Han (Sung Kang) and Gisele (Gal Gadot); Gina Carano is a newcomer as an agent whose fighting skills give Letty a run for her money.

Not everyone gets out alive. As for the lucrative franchise, though, it's more than alive and kicking, judging from the new film's overseas success. A post-credits sequence teases the upcoming seventh film. In the "Fast & Furious" universe, it's not just international criminals who rake it in.

"Fast & Furious 6," a Universal Studios release, is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action and mayhem throughout, some sexuality and language. Running time: 130 minutes. Two stars out of four.

(AP) ? German driver Nico Rosberg posted the fastest time in the crash-marred third practice session of the Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday.

The Mercedes driver, who was fastest in both practice runs on Thursday, is aiming for a third straight pole position and will be confident heading into the afternoon's qualifying.

Monaco's razor-thin, sinewy street circuit again proved hard to handle and Ferrari driver Felipe Massa was fortunate to walk away unharmed after a heavy crash.

Lotus driver Romain Grosjean posted the second fastest time before crashing near the end, losing control as he came too fast into turn one, hitting the barriers and bouncing across the track. Earlier, Adrian Sutil lost control of his Force India and zigzagged across the track into the barriers

Three-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel was third quickest for Red Bull ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

The session was interrupted by a red flag after Massa's crash.

The Brazilian slipped wide to the left and into the barriers, his left front wheel almost coming clean off as smoke billowed out of the back of his Ferrari, and then flew nose-first into a crash barrier. He handed his steering wheel to a marshal as he climbed out of the cockpit, giving the thumbs up to show he was unharmed. But his mechanics face a race against time to get the car ready for qualifying.

After a crane had lifted Massa's Ferrari off the track, practice resumed a few minutes later ?but it almost immediately came to halt as Sutil lost control. Like Grosjean's crash, it also seemed to be a driving error.

Former champion Kimi Raikkonen had a narrow escape when his rear wheels locked up and he managed to stop his Lotus just in front of the wall.

Raikkonen is four points behind Vettel overall and can move to the top of the standings if he wins in Monaco. But the Finn has struggled for speed in qualifying, and Monaco is the hardest track in F1 for overtaking with only two drivers winning from outside of pole in the past 10 years.

Red Bull has won the last three Monaco GPs, with Vettel's win in 2011 sandwiched in between Mark Webber's two victories.

Prepare to party for 'Behind the Candelabra'

TV

Michael Douglas as Liberace in "Behind the Candelabra."

Claudette Barius / HBO

Michael Douglas as Liberace in "Behind the Candelabra."

The sequin-covered this, the rhinestone-encrusted that, the champagne cocktails, and -- oh! -- the frilled cuffs and collars. Sunday night is the big event: "Behind the Candelabra," the highly anticipated Liberace-Scott Thorson relationship flick, finally comes to the small screen.

It's also the perfect night to host the ultimate TV viewing party. After all, with so much glamour and excess set to hit the boob tube, it seems a shame not to let a little of that spill over into your living room.

Director Steven Soderbergh has made it clear that, despite the kitsch factor, the film isn't a shallow, campy effort. It's a look at a real relationship and real people -- at least as real as a story can be when it's based on Thorson's tell-all book, which was written after his lover-turned-benefactor-turned-bitter-ex died.

But just because the story is getting a thoughtful treatment on-screen, that doesn't mean you can't make a camp-filled f?te of it off-screen.

"Behind the Candelabra"

HBO

Just having a new movie with the combined star power of Michael Douglas and Matt Damon is reason enough for a little celebration. Add to it that the former is portraying one of the most popular (and easily the most flamboyant) entertainers of the 20th century, and the latter is playing the suing-mad, surgically-enhanced chauffeur who outed him -- well, pop culture rarely offers up such party-worthy plots.

So, let the celebration begin!

The menu
It's easy to go overboard with a bash like this -- and let's face it, it's necessary for most elements of a proper Liberace-themed party. The man himself was the definition of overboard. But when it comes to refreshments, keep the menu simple and the bar open.

For food, just get your hands on a used copy of the classic (and sadly out of print) "Liberace Cooks!" and let Mr. Showmanship himself plan your meal with "delicious recipes for you from his seven dining rooms." If you can't pull that off, just go with one of the recipes you can find online -- Liberace Sticky Buns anyone?

The music
If you have to ask what music to play, you're throwing the wrong party. Unless you or your guests know how to tickle the ivories particularly well, keep Liberace's own brand of pumped-up pop and quasi-classical tunes playing until show time.

The mood
Look around your place. Glitz? Glam? Glitter? If you answered "no" to any of those one-word queries, then it's back to work. You're not party-ready until it all shines, sparkles or reflects.

The main attraction
If everything else is just so, then it's time to focus on the part of the party that really matters: the costumes. Whether you and your guests are draped in floor-length faux furs or wearing a blinding amount of sequins, don't hold back. Dress as Liberace. Dress as Scott Thorson. Dress as one of their glitterati pals. Heck, dress up as one of the kids from "Toddlers & Tiaras," as long as your outfit knows no subtlety.

Rob Lowe.

HBO

Prepare a prize or two for the best costumes. Did someone wear every ring they own (and borrow a few more too)? Prize. Did someone actually tape their skin back for that fresh-from-the-old-school-plastic-surgeon's-office look (just like Rob Lowe did for his part as Dr. Jack Startz, Liberace's go-to face man, in "Candelabra")? Big prize.

Start bringing out the bling now. There's just enough time to plan the party and polish your candelabra (you do have a candelabra?) before the TV event kicks off.

"Behind the Candelabra" airs May 26 at 9 p.m. on HBO.

Obama explains use of drones, Guantanamo

President Barack Obama at the Oval Office in Washington on May 20, 2013. (Larry Downing/Reuters)President Barack Obama will defend his counterterrorism policies in a speech at National Defense University on Thursday afternoon, looking to reassure Americans concerned about his hugely controversial targeted assassination strategy with drones and revive efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay prison for suspected extremists.

Obama?s remarks come as key lawmakers have begun debating whether to revise and update the post-9/11 law that underpins most of the so-called war on terrorism, legislation known as the Authorization for Use of Military Force, or AUMF. Critics worry the executive branch has interpreted the AUMF as a blank check for a global campaign over which lawmakers have only limited oversight.

Ahead of the speech, here are some questions about Obama?s approach to the anti-terror campaign begun when al-Qaida militants slammed hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.

? How long does Obama think the conflict against al-Qaida will last?

It?s been called "the forever war.? Some critics have scoffed at the very idea of a ?war on terrorism,? arguing that because terrorism is a tactic, the United States might as well be fighting a ?war on flanking maneuvers.? Obama shares this view, at least based on these remarks from 2004.

What does he think now? Does he agree with Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict Michael Sheehan, who told the Senate Armed Services Committee in a May 16 hearing that the conflict will last "at least 10 to 20 years" from today?

? Are drones creating more extremists than they are killing?

At an April 30, 2013, press conference, Obama renewed his call to close the detention facility for suspected extremists at the U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Why? "It is critical for us to understand that Guantanamo is not necessary to keep America safe. It is expensive. It is inefficient. It hurts us in terms of our international standing. It lessens cooperation with our allies on counterterrorism efforts. It is a recruitment tool for extremists. It needs to be closed."

Will he address that same question now for drones? There's ample evidence that America's drone strikes are vastly unpopular across the Muslim world. While U.S. officials play down civilian casualties and insist that the United States takes every precaution to minimize them, such tragedies occur and plainly fuel anti-U.S. sentiment.

There is precedent for a president asking the U.S. intelligence community to make such an assessment. A formal 2006 study by America?s intelligence community found that the Iraq invasion and occupation was creating terrorists faster than U.S. forces could take them out.

And there?s a problem with past Obama promises to use deadly force only in response to imminent danger of attack. The White House has redefined ?imminent threat? to the point of meaninglessness. A Justice Department memo, revealed in February, declares that ??imminent? threat of violent attack against the United States does not require the United States to have clear evidence that a specific attack on U.S. persons and interests will take place in the immediate future.?

And a May 2012 New York Times report said the administration minimizes civilian casualties by counting "all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants."

? How will America respond to drone strikes by other countries?

The Obama administration has argued that it has the right to kill suspected terrorists inside other countries, with or without the host country's green light. The president reaffirmed that right in May 2011 when he ordered the raid on a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, that killed terror mastermind Osama bin Laden.

So what happens when China or Russia assassinates someone they consider a terrorist? It's hardly an idle concern. Countries are racing to make up lost time in the race for drones. U.S. ally France, for instance, is in talks to buy drones from the United States and Israel. Others aren't far behind.

There are related questions. Will Obama push for some kind of global regulatory structure affecting drone sales, something akin to nonproliferation regimes affecting the transfer of nuclear or chemical weapon technology?

? How many Americans, total, have been killed by their government since 2009?

The administration revealed late Wednesday that four Americans have been killed in drone strikes "outside of areas of active hostilities" since 2009: radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki and three others who were ?not specifically targeted.? What about inside areas of active hostilities, like Iraq or Afghanistan? What about with means other than drone strikes?

? How will Obama overcome bipartisan opposition to closing Guantanamo Bay?

The first lawmaker to deal a major blow to Obama's promise to close the facility was a Democrat, then-House Appropriations Committee Chairman Dave Obey. And with the campaign ahead of the 2014 midterms already heating up, vulnerable Democrats may not rush to support the president's approach.

? How will Obama deal with the Guantanamo detainees that his administration has decided cannot be tried in court and are too dangerous to be released?

This has always been a policy nightmare. No U.S. president wants to free someone who might turn around and attack Americans. And it's not clear what's to be gained from simply transferring the detainees to another facility to end their days there.

? How does an American get off Obama's "kill list"?

Apart, of course, from the way that results in drone pilots half a world away high-fiving each other? If there are no formal charges to contest, where do you go if you think your government has wrongly targeted you for assassination? Or, as the author of a harrowing book on Obama's counterterrorism strategy, Jeremy Scahill, puts it: "How do you surrender to a drone?"

? Why can't the next president just roll back any changes Obama makes?

A White House official said late Wednesday that Obama's speech would coincide with "the signing of new Presidential Policy Guidance that lays out the standards under which we take lethal action."

But presidents have a tough enough time fulfilling their own campaign promises (see: Guantanamo Bay, Obama's pledge to close), never mind abiding by their predecessors' rules. Whatever unilateral steps Obama announces on Thursday, a future president could likely undo.

Moody's Employees Build Bikes for U.S. Military Families

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Moody's Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Moody?s Corporation (MCO), today hosted a ?Bike Build? event that donated over 50 children?s bicycles built by Moody?s employees to the families of U.S. service members. The event was held in partnership with the USO of Metropolitan New York, a nonprofit organization focused on lifting the spirits of America?s troops and their families.

?We are grateful that so many Moody?s employees were eager to donate their time to bring extra joy and happiness by building bikes for military families.?

Over 60 Moody?s employees volunteered their time throughout the day to help assemble and test bikes as part of the company?s ongoing commitment to community service. Last year, Moody?s employees worldwide donated over 8,800 volunteer service hours through Moody?s Foundation sponsored projects in their communities.

"I am thrilled that so many of our employees have stepped forward to show their support in such a tangible way for military families,??said Linda S. Huber, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Moody's Corporation and a former captain in the U.S. Army. ?This underscores the spirit of service and generosity that Moody?s employees around the world have demonstrated through their regular participation in community service events.?

The Bike Build initiative began in response to service members explaining that the best way to help them is to help their families. Nearly 20 military families from across the New York City area attended the event, which included Army National Guard soldiers and their families.

"With the approach of Memorial Day it is especially important that we remember the service and sacrifice our military families make each and every day of the year,??said Brian Whiting, President and CEO of the USO of Metropolitan New York. ?We are grateful that so many Moody?s employees were eager to donate their time to bring extra joy and happiness by building bikes for military families.?

The USO Bike Build aligns with other recent Moody?s Foundation activities to benefit the military community. The Foundation also hosts service members in Moody?s Interview University, a workshop that pairs Moody?s employees with veterans to help improve their interviewing skills as they transition to the private sector. In addition, Moody?s recently formed an employee networking group composed of military veterans and their supporters.

About The Moody?s Foundation

The Moody's Foundation is a charitable foundation established by Moody's Corporation. Moody's is committed to supporting education, in particular the study of mathematics, finance and economics and funds specific initiatives in the areas of health and human services, arts and culture, civic and economic development programs. gmail-logo-iconThe folks over on Android Police must have spent some of their time rewatching I/O videos. While they were doing that, they spotted a potential leak during the "Structure in Android App Design" session. In it, it seems, Google quietly leaked screenshots of what looks to be a revamped interface for the Gmail app.

Irving Oil partners with Acadia University as first natural gas customer in Nova Scotia

HALIFAX, May 21, 2013 /CNW/ - Irving Oil today announced that Acadia University will begin receiving compressed natural gas (CNG) at its location in Wolfville, Nova Scotia this year. The University will be the first facility in the Annapolis Valley to receive compressed natural gas via truck transport.?We?re very pleased to have partnered with Acadia University and are pleased they will benefit from the potential cost savings of this leading-edge natural gas technology,? said Paul Browning, President and CEO, Irving Oil. ?Compressed natural gas provides industrial customers like Acadia University and other commercial customers in Nova Scotia a less expensive, clean-burning, high-quality fuel alternative.?

The transportation of compressed natural gas is very similar to gasoline or propane transport, and Irving Oil has safely handled and delivered energy in multiple forms to customers for decades.

?Acadia?s conversion to compressed natural gas for our steam plant is an
important element in our campus plan to lower costs, improve our operating efficiency and reduce our environmental footprint,? said Ray Ivany, President and Vice-Chancellor of Acadia University. ?Irving Oil has been a trusted energy supplier to Acadia for many years and its proposal to supply CNG to our new facility best met our operating requirements, our timeline for conversion and our commitment to our community. Through an investment by the Province of Nova Scotia?s Excellence and Innovation Fund and our continued relationship with Irving Oil, Acadia?s CNG conversion project will position us as a leader in using new energy alternatives in the Annapolis Valley.?

Irving Oil has been processing and delivering energy in multiple forms to
Atlantic Canada and New England customers since 1924, providing diesel, heating oil, propane, bunker, natural gas and other products. ?Every day our employees make up to 6000 energy product deliveries by truck. Delivered natural gas is an extension of our existing natural gas and trucking business and a great option for customers who don?t have access to the natural gas pipeline,? said Browning.
