Academy unhappy but helpless to stop Oscar auction

(AP) ? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is not pleased with plans to auction off 15 Oscar statuettes from such films as "Citizen Kane," ''Wuthering Heights" and "Little Women."

But the academy says its hands are tied in blocking the Tuesday sale by Nate D. Sanders Auctions because the statuettes were awarded prior to 1950, when a "winners agreement" was instituted banning the sale of Oscars.

"Oscars should be won, not purchased," the academy said in a statement, adding that it had no "legal means of stopping the commoditization of these particular statuettes."

The Sanders Co. expects its total Oscar inventory, which includes Herman Mankiewicz's 1941 screenplay award for "Citizen Kane," to command more than $1 million.

Bodybuilders Nutritional Plans -Choosing the Right One | New ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

To be a successful bodybuilder, you must use a nutrition plan that is effective to get the desired result. Bodybuilders that do weight training must understand that they are placing their body under higher than normal amounts of physical stress.

Additional supplements, and greater nutritional intake, are required when doing this level of exercise on a regular basis. Your bodybuilding activities and goals could be compromised if you learn the wrong information when you start out. In fact, even experienced bodybuilders can receive misinformation regarding important nutritional information. What follows are a few key elements that will help you develop a balanced nutrition plan.

It?s a good idea to keep track of your overall caloric intake. Naturally, it?s also important where your calories come from, and one of the best types of nutrients you should be eating are carbohydrates of the lean or healthy variety. The idea is to seek carbs that are high quality and that don?t contain much fat. These type of foods will help your body use glucose in the most efficient way possible. While this practice helps you build muscle while losing fat, you have to be sensible about it. Since bodybuilders are working to increase muscle while reducing fat, they can?t afford to starve themselves of nutrients, including carbs. As a bodybuilder, you have to pay close attention to the number of carbohydrates that you take in. How many you ingest every day will depend on your specific goals. It?s easy to either get more carbs than you need or not enough, and this is an individual matter. There are certain general guidelines that tell you how many carbs you should eat relative to your weight, such as 2 grams for every pound. But if you?re trying to lose -or gain- a significant amount of weight, you?d have to make adjustments. Eating more protein and a moderate number of carbs is a good formula for adding muscle and losing fat. If you don?t want to reduce your weight, which may include muscle mass, make sure your body isn?t starved for carbs. It?s all a matter of finding the right balance.

Your muscle mass will actually diminish if you do not eat enough protein each day. Instead of gaining muscle mass, you are actually going to lose it which is a problem.

Bodybuilders must always know what they are doing with their nutritional plan. If you find that you are eating something and not sure why, then it is imperative to know why you are eating it. When you do this, you may have a setback in your appearance and performance plans.

Bill Maher Puts $1M Behind Pro-Obama Super PAC | FOX8.com ...

By Dan Merica, CNN

WASHINGTON ? Comedian Bill Maher is putting his money where his mouth is.

The comedian and talk show host who has long railed on the weakness of the Republican presidential field announced at a stand up comedy show on Thursday that he would donate $1 million to Priorities USA Action, a pro-Obama Super PAC.

?My surprise tonight is I would like to tonight announce a donation to the Obama Super PAC?which has the very unfortunate tongue-twister name ?Priority (sic) USA Action?,? Maher said. ?I know, it was named by Borat. But tonight I would like to give that PAC one million dollars.?

The concert, which was live streamed on Yahoo!, was held in San Jose, California and was billed by Yahoo! As the first stand-up comedy concert to be streamed live online.

In a tweet after the event, Maher said the announcement was a surprise to the Yahoo! organizers.

?Thank u everybody who?s hit me up after the show, and a great San Jose audience. Obama donation was a surprise to Yahoo too fyi!?

Maher, whose comedy show is called ?CrazyStupidPolitics,? has not been shy about his opinions of the 2012 race and when he spoke with CNN?s Anderson Cooper, he said that other than Ron Paul, the Republican candidates running for president have ?horrible society killing ideas about America.?

?The rest of those people are, of course, selling their souls to the corporate interests who back them,? Maher said. ?They all act like god created the world in January of 2009, and then Barack Obama completely screwed it up.?

When asked in the same interview who he thought was going to win the 2012 electron, Maher quickly tapped the president as the eventual winner.

?My money is still on Mitt Romney,? said Maher when asked who the eventual Republican nominee. ?And I think he?s going to get the nomination, and then I think Obama is going to beat him like a runaway sister wife, yes, I do.?

Maher?s million dollar donation will substantially boost the coffers of the Super PAC which raised only $58,815.83 in January, according to a report filed earlier in the week with the Federal Election Commission.

Aion will be going Free to Play (F2P) like its European counterpart (link) and will boot the new version 3.0 update into the package as well.

New features such as player housing, more character customizations, gliding mounts and a new expanded storyline is nothing but welcoming for Aion, which a couple of players I spoke to have been complaining about it getting ?stale?. Some of the new features can be seen in the Korean launch trailer below.

Romney Jabs at Santorum's Record in CNN Debate | FOX8.com ...

The Arizona Republican Presidential Debate

By Rachel Streitfeld and John Helton, CNN

MESA, Arizona ? Rick Santorum found that his position at the top of polls made him the biggest target in Wednesday?s CNN Republican presidential debate, possibly the last of the GOP primary and caucus campaign.

Mitt Romney, who has been front-runner off and on through the campaign but saw his momentum blunted by Santorum?s recent surge, went after the former Pennsylvania senator over his record in Congress, trying to shoulder past him before Tuesday?s primaries in Arizona and Michigan, which most polls show neck-and-neck between the two.

?Voting for the debt ceiling five different times without voting for compensating cuts,? said Romney, describing Santorum as a big spender in Congress. ?Voting to fund Planned Parenthood, voting to expand the Department of Education. During his term in the Senate spending grew by some 80% of the federal government.?

Santorum, who surged to the top of state and national polling after sweeping the February 7 contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, was sitting center stage next to Romney and was quick to fire back.

?When you look at my record of never having raised taxes ? Gov. Romney raised several hundred million dollars in taxes and fees in Massachusetts. I never voted to raise taxes,? Santorum said. ?Gov. Romney even today suggested raising taxes on the top 1%, adopting the Occupy Wall Street rhetoric. I?m not going to adopt that rhetoric.?

Santorum?s opponents joined together to attack a vote he made in support of larger bill that, in part, provided funds to Planned Parenthood.

?If you voted for Planned Parenthood, like the senator has, you voted for birth control pills,? Paul charged. ?And you literally, because funds are fungible, you literally vote for abortions because Planned Parenthood gets the money ? they have the money left over to do abortion.?

Romney followed up aggressively, saying Santorum had not backed away from the vote in a subsequent interview.

Santorum insisted he had always been clear that as president he would defund Planned Parenthood.

?I admit I voted for large appropriation bills and there were things in there I didn?t like,? he said, but explained he had also created a program that funded abstinence-based education in schools

The candidates confronted each other in a lengthy and contentious argument over the congressional process of earmarking, often derided as ?pork-barrel? spending.

?Congress has a role to play when it comes to appropriating money,? Santorum declared in a full-throated, detailed defense of the process ? one he said Romney had taken advantage of when he requested funds for the 2002 Olympic Games in Utah.

?I didn?t follow all of that,? Romney cracked after Santorum finished speaking. While criticizing Santorum for some of the earmarks he supported, Romney defended his request for Olympic funds.

?While I was fighting to save the Olympics, you were fighting to save the ?Bridge to Nowhere,? ? he said.

Santorum did not back down, telling Romney: ?You don?t know what you?re talking about.?

The former senator said Romney?s defense of that Olympic funding request amounted to approval of the earmarking process.

?What you just suggested as to how earmarks should work in the future is exactly how they worked in the past,? Santorum said. ?So I suspect you would have supported earmarks if you were in the United States Senate.?

Romney also came up with a new line of defense against Santorum?s repeated attacks on the health care plan passed in Massachusetts when he was governor as being the blueprint for Obama?s national health care law by attacking Santorum?s support of former Republican Sen. Arlen Specter against conservative challenger Pat Toomey. Specter later switched parties and voted for Obama?s health care law.

?If we had said ?no? to Arlen Specter, we would not have ObamaCare,? Romney told Santorum.

The two were seated next to each other at a table, flanked by Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and often turned to each other as they attacked.

While listening to Santorum?s criticism, Romney shook his head or looked slightly to the side with a pained expression on his face. Santorum raised his eyebrows at Romney?s attacks at him and looked off to the side as if he was running Romney?s words through his mind.

Meanwhile, at several points Gingrich was captured chuckling at the other candidates? statements.

The debate, hosted by CNN and the Republican Party of Arizona at the Mesa Arts Center, was the 20th in the campaign and the last before the candidates will share a stage before primaries in Arizona and Michigan on Tuesday, before Washington state holds a contest on March 3, and before 10 more states hold primaries or caucuses on Super Tuesday on March 6. And no more debates are scheduled. CNN canceled a debate in advance of Super Tuesday after Romney, Santorum and Paul pulled out.

The four last met on January 26 before the Florida primary. Romney went on to win big there and in Nevada, while Gingrich, who had just scored an impressive victory in South Carolina, faded fast.

While Romney and Santorum grew heated at times, Paul deflated the tension a bit when asked why he had labeled Santorum a fake in a television ad that attacked the former senator?s conservative credentials.

?Because he?s a fake,? Paul said.

That line drew cheers, laughter and boos, before Santorum assured moderator John King that he was real.

?Congratulations,? Paul responded.

A question on contraception gave Gingrich the opportunity to attack moderator King and a chance for agreement between Santorum and Romney.

When King related a viewer?s question on whether the candidates believed in birth control, Gingrich took immediate offense.

?You did not once in the 2008 campaign, not once did anybody in the elite media ask why Barack Obama voted in favor of legalizing infanticide. OK? So let?s be clear here,? Gingrich said, which brought applause from the audience. ?If we?re going to have a debate about who the extremist is on these issues, it is President Obama who, as a state senator, voted to protect doctors who killed babies who survived the abortion. It is not the Republicans.?

However, Santorum and Romney did reach general agreement on the budding controversy over the issue, as both bemoaned the number of American children born out of wedlock.

?How can the country survive if children are being raised in homes where it?s so much harder to succeed economically?? Santorum asked, but added he was speaking ideologically rather than advocating government intervention.

?Just because I?m talking about it doesn?t mean I want a government program to fix it,? he said.

Romney suggested the president should be ?willing to say? the best opportunity a parent could give his child is a mother and a father.

Paul, a former obstetrician, said government should not insert itself into a debate over contraception. But, likening a user of birth control to a gun owner, Paul said the problem was not the contraception pill but the ?immorality? of society.

?I think it?s sort of like the argument ? conservatives use the argument all the time about guns. Guns don?t kill, criminals kill,? Paul said. ?So, in a way, it?s the morality of society that we have to deal with. The pill is there and, you know, it contributes, maybe, but the pills can?t be blamed for the immorality of our society.?

Asked to use one word to describe themselves, Paul proudly replied, ?consistent.?

Santorum?s word was ?courage,? and Romney?s was ?resolute.?

The curmudgeonly Gingrich got a laugh when he described himself as ?cheerful.?

? CNN?s Marlena Baldacci and Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.

(AP) ? Former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo pleaded not guilty to an electoral fraud charge Thursday at the opening of a landmark trial that is seen as a key test of her reformist successor's campaign to stamp out corruption.

Arroyo, president from 2001 to 2010, is accused of rigging the results of senatorial polls in 2007 to favor her candidates. The electoral sabotage charge is the first of several criminal cases being prepared against her.

"Not guilty," she told the court in a soft voice and with a stoic expression after her defense team waived a full reading of charge details. If convicted, she could face life in prison.

The stakes are high for both Arroyo and President Benigno Aquino III. Aquino risks losing public support if she is acquitted and his rallying cry of "no corruption, no poverty" may fizzle out as just another failed attempt to fix the graft and poor governance that have hounded the nation for decades.

Arroyo's acquittal would vindicate a former leader who has portrayed her prosecution as a political vendetta to destroy her reputation and mask Aquino's failure to improve the lives of Filipinos, a third of whom lives on $1 a day.

"Despite the continuous and massive vilification campaign against me and my family, I have always said that I will dispute all charges in the proper forum," Arroyo said in a statement, adding she wants to clear her name.

She promised to respect the law and said she expects the same from the country's leaders.

Aquino's spokesman Edwin Lacierda said that Arroyo's arraignment "brings us one step closer toward attaining closure to the many controversies" during her administration.

"Accountability escapes no one," he said.

The electoral fraud case against the former president centers on a notoriously corrupt southern Philippine region where all 12 of Arroyo's Senate candidates swept all the votes and no opposition candidate won.

According to the charges, there are witnesses who said Arroyo gave instruction to rig the vote in collusion with a powerful political clan leader, Andal Ampatuan Sr. Ampatuan is on trial facing murder charges in connection with the 2009 politically motivated massacre of 57 people, including 32 journalists and opponents. He has pleaded not guilty.

Arroyo's husband, Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo, said that his wife "feels the case is an injustice."

"There is no case here," he added.

He said his wife is frustrated, and still suffering from spine and back pain that he said requires medical treatment abroad. After her appearance, which lasted about 10 minutes, Arroyo was escorted under tight security from the courtroom to a military hospital where she is detained while being treated for the spine ailment.

Court spokeswoman Felda Domingo said the trial is historic because "the votes of the people were sabotaged and the accused is a former president."

Aquino has promised to root out corruption and said that no one should be allowed to evade justice.

"There are no exceptions in our campaign against corruption," he said in a speech Tuesday. "It shouldn't matter if you are a former president or in the lower ranks of public service. If you are dishonest, then you must be held to account."

Arroyo's arrest in November struck chord among many Filipinos hungry for accountability following her presidency, which was overshadowed by scandals, coup attempts and botched congressional hearings into corruption allegations involving Arroyo's officials and family members.

Apart from the electoral fraud charge, Arroyo is facing a second criminal case in a separate court over an overpriced deal with a Chinese telecommunications giant that allegedly involved huge kickbacks. Two more cases are being filed against her ? for the alleged plunder of lottery funds and the alleged diversion of $17 million in state funds to boost her 2004 election.

Whitney Houston Possessions To Be Auctioned Off Already!

A Whitney Houston auction already, nope it is not a joke my friends. The word on the street is that some of the late signer’s possessions will soon be auctioned off. Merely two days after the high profile funeral for Houston it has been revealed that next month some of her possessions will be up for auction. Way too freaking soon if you ask me but then again I am not someone looking to make money off of the death of a celebrity. Sorry went on a little rant but I had to do a little venting before I continued on because I have such issues with this. Anyway here is the lowdown on what the plan is for fans and those who love to collect memorabilia, they will have the opportunity to bid on personal items of Whitney?s. There is allegedly going to be a number of various items that people can bid on, including a black velvet dress and a set of fake pearls that the legendary singer/actress wore in The Bodyguard. The auction is reportedly part of a bigger auction being called ?Hollywood Legends? that will also feature possessions from Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana. [...]

Los Angeles Divorce and Family Lawyer Blog: Single, Unwed ...

LORAIN, Ohio ? It used to be called illegitimacy. Now it is the new normal. After steadily rising for five decades, the share of children born to unmarried women has crossed a threshold: more than half of births to American women under 30 occur outside marriage.

Once largely limited to poor women and minorities, motherhood without marriage has settled deeply into middle America. The fastest growth in the last two decades has occurred among white women in their 20s who have some college education but no four-year degree, according to Child Trends, a Washington research group that analyzed government data.

Among mothers of all ages, a majority ? 59 percent in 2009 ? are married when they have children. But the surge of births outside marriage among younger women ? nearly two-thirds of children in the United States are born to mothers under 30 ? is both a symbol of the transforming family and a hint of coming generational change.

One group still largely resists the trend: college graduates, who overwhelmingly marry before having children. That is turning family structure into a new class divide, with the economic and social rewards of marriage increasingly reserved for people with the most education.

?Marriage has become a luxury good,? said Frank Furstenberg, a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania.

The shift is affecting children?s lives. Researchers have consistently found that children born outside marriage face elevated risks of falling into poverty, failing in school or suffering emotional and behavioral problems.

The forces rearranging the family are as diverse as globalization and the pill. Liberal analysts argue that shrinking paychecks have thinned the ranks of marriageable men, while conservatives often say that the sexual revolution reduced the incentive to wed and that safety net programs discourage marriage.

Here in Lorain, a blue-collar town west of Cleveland where the decline of the married two-parent family has been especially steep, dozens of interviews with young parents suggest that both sides have a point.

Over the past generation, Lorain lost most of two steel mills, a shipyard and a Ford factory, diminishing the supply of jobs that let blue-collar workers raise middle-class families. More women went to work, making marriage less of a financial necessity for them. Living together became routine, and single motherhood lost the stigma that once sent couples rushing to the altar. Women here often describe marriage as a sign of having arrived rather than a way to get there.

Meanwhile, children happen.

Amber Strader, 27, was in an on-and-off relationship with a clerk at Sears a few years ago when she found herself pregnant. A former nursing student who now tends bar, Ms. Strader said her boyfriend was so dependent that she had to buy his cigarettes. Marrying him never entered her mind. ?It was like living with another kid,? she said.

When a second child, with a new boyfriend, followed three years later ? her birth control failed, she said ? her boyfriend, a part-time house painter, was reluctant to wed.

Ms. Strader likes the idea of marriage; she keeps her parents? wedding photo on her kitchen wall and says her boyfriend is a good father. But for now marriage is beyond her reach.

?I?d like to do it, but I just don?t see it happening right now,? she said. ?Most of my friends say it?s just a piece of paper, and it doesn?t work out anyway.?

The recent rise in single motherhood has set off few alarms, unlike in past eras. When Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then a top Labor Department official and later a United States senator from New York, reported in 1965 that a quarter of black children were born outside marriage ? and warned of a ?tangle of pathology? ? he set off a bitter debate.

By the mid-1990s, such figures looked quaint: a third of Americans were born outside marriage. Congress, largely blaming welfare, imposed tough restrictions. Now the figure is 41 percent ? and 53 percent for children born to women under 30, according to Child Trends, which analyzed 2009 data from the National Center for Health Statistics.

Still, the issue received little attention until the publication last month of ?Coming Apart,? a book by Charles Murray, a longtime critic of non-marital births.

Large racial differences remain: 73 percent of black children are born outside marriage, compared with 53 percent of Latinos and 29 percent of whites. And educational differences are growing. About 92 percent of college-educated women are married when they give birth, compared with 62 percent of women with some post-secondary schooling and 43 percent of women with a high school diploma or less, according to Child Trends.

Almost all of the rise in nonmarital births has occurred among couples living together. While in some countries such relationships endure at rates that resemble marriages, in the United States they are more than twice as likely to dissolve than marriages. In a summary of research, Pamela Smock and Fiona Rose Greenland, both of the University of Michigan, reported that two-thirds of couples living together split up by the time their child turned 10.

In Lorain as elsewhere, explanations for marital decline start with home economics: men are worth less than they used to be. Among men with some college but no degrees, earnings have fallen 8 percent in the past 30 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, while the earnings of their female counterparts have risen by 8 percent.

?Women used to rely on men, but we don?t need to anymore,? said Teresa Fragoso, 25, a single mother in Lorain. ?We support ourselves. We support our kids.?

Fifty years ago, researchers have found, as many as a third of American marriages were precipitated by a pregnancy, with couples marrying to maintain respectability. Ms. Strader?s mother was among them.

Today, neither of Ms. Strader?s pregnancies left her thinking she should marry to avoid stigma. Like other women interviewed here, she described her children as largely unplanned, a byproduct of uncommitted relationships.

Some unwed mothers cite the failures of their parents? marriages as reasons to wait. Brittany Kidd was 13 when her father ran off with one of her mother?s friends, plunging her mother into depression and leaving the family financially unstable.

?Our family life was pretty perfect: a nice house, two cars, a dog and a cat,? she said. ?That stability just got knocked out like a window; it shattered.?

Ms. Kidd, 21, said she could not imagine marrying her son?s father, even though she loves him. ?I don?t want to wind up like my mom,? she said.

Others noted that if they married, their official household income would rise, which could cost them government benefits like food stamps and child care. W. Bradford Wilcox, a sociologist at the University of Virginia, said other government policies, like no-fault divorce, signaled that ?marriage is not as fundamental to society? as it once was.

Even as many Americans withdraw from marriage, researchers say, they expect more from it: emotional fulfillment as opposed merely to practical support. ?Family life is no longer about playing the social role of father or husband or wife, it?s more about individual satisfaction and self-development,? said Andrew Cherlin, a sociologist at Johns Hopkins University.

Money helps explain why well-educated Americans still marry at high rates: they can offer each other more financial support, and hire others to do chores that prompt conflict. But some researchers argue that educated men have also been quicker than their blue-collar peers to give women equal authority. ?They are more willing to play the partner role,? said Sara McLanahan, a Princeton sociologist.

Reviewing the academic literature, Susan L. Brown of Bowling Green State University recently found that children born to married couples, on average, ?experience better education, social, cognitive and behavioral outcomes.?

Lisa Mercado, an unmarried mother in Lorain, would not be surprised by that. Between nursing classes and an all-night job at a gas station, she rarely sees her 6-year-old daughter, who is left with a rotating cast of relatives. The girl?s father has other children and rarely lends a hand.

?I want to do things with her, but I end up falling asleep,? Ms. Mercado said.

Global Climate Modeling for the Masses

Climate modeler Mark Chandler discusses and demonstrates the Educational Global Climate Modeling Project an integrated suite of software that allows university students and teachers to run climate simulations and experiments on desktop computers, without the need for programmers and supercomputers used by major climate centers. EdGCM is a fully functional version of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) Global Climate Model II, and has been used in original research projects. It is now available mainly at the undergraduate level, but there is now a push to expand into K-12 settings. Chandler is affiliated with both GISS and Columbia's Center for Climate Systems Research.

East Africa's Drying and Worldwide Weather

It is a mystery why East Africa changed 2 million years ago from a moist region into the arid savannah grasslands of today. This is a vital question, as the switch may have been a turning point in human evolution, and related processes could shape future climate. Paleoclimatologist Peter deMenocal (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) says there is now evidence from deep-sea sediment cores that changes in relative sea-surface temperatures across wide areas of the world essentially created the wind and rain patterns of today, driving the switch. Should sea-surface temperatures shift again substantially in the future, this could drastically rearrange the weather patterns of the modern world.

Does Intensive Farming Really Save Land?

It is an article of faith that the spread of modern high-yield farming will reduce pressure on remaining tropical forests, because more produce will grow on less land; but does it really work that way? An interdisciplinary research group headed by Ruth deFries (Center for Environmental Research and Conservation) says it is not that simple. Using remote sensing and on-the-ground legwork, they have found that in southern Brazil, large-scale soy farms are expanding mainly into already deforested land. But in the Peruvian Amazon, high-yield oil palm plantations are expanding primarily into remaining forests. Market forces and government policies may have as much to do with it as agriculture itself, says DeFries. (In related research, team members are also studying massive burning in the Amazon associated with clearing and maintaining farmland.)

Climate and Rising Food Prices

Rising temperatures in coming decades may push yields of major U.S. crops off a cliff, with drastic effects for food prices, says Columbia University economist Wolfram Schlenker. Warmth may improve yields of some crops for a while, but U.S. corn and soybeanstwo-fifths of the world supplywill reach a tipping point, and could plummet 30% to 80% because of excessive heat, depending on how high temperatures go. The projections rest on earlier county-by-county studies of U.S. agriculture. A new working paper takes the climate/crop projections the next step, and estimates the consequences for world food prices, which could go up 30%. The damage could be at least partly mitigated if we stop using so many calories for biofuels, says Schlenker.

How to Stop Warming the Earth: Beyond CO2

Carbon dioxide is the main driver of manmade global warming, but not the only; methane and other gases are also at work; cutting them and other non-CO2 pollutants could help slow warming quickly and save lives due to improved air quality, says recent Earth Institute research. Atmospheric scientist Arlene Fiore of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory focuses here on methane, a precursor to ozone (a main component of urban smog) 25 times more potent than CO2. Fiore will dissect how long methane can persist in the air, depending on varying temperature (for instance, higher temperatures may drive more methane from swamps and other natural sources), humidity and presence of other pollutants; how that translates to ozone pollution; and the implications for air quality and climate across the United States in coming years. Scientific, Economic and Moral Issues of Climate Change

James Hansen, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, has become one of the scientific world's most outspoken advocates for curbing CO2 emissions. He advocates rolling back the atmospheric CO2 concentration roughly to the largely pre-modern level of 350 parts per million. (It is now up to about 392 ppm.) Hansen will review the reasoning behind targeting 350, and discuss an energy roadmap for getting there.

Business Ethics and Principled Leadership

Each day, entrepreneurs face myriad decisions about ethical issues shaping the fiber of their enterprises. With each choice, business owners establish their credibility and reputations as they form partnerships, close deals, and sign contracts. Every move?such as delivering on promises and looking out for others? interests beyond personal gains?determines entrepreneurs? ability to form a ?code? and sense of unwavering honor.

Doug Guthrie, dean of the George Washington University School of Business, addresses the issue of ?Paying More Than Lip Service to Business Ethics? in a recent issue of Forbes. He is an expert in the fields of economic reform in China, leadership and corporate governance, and corporate social responsibility.

?Touting the benefits of corporate responsibility and principled leadership is de rigueur in U.S. business these days, especially to rebut and placate the media or government regulators whenever the latest corporate ethical lapse hits the headlines,? writes Dr. Guthrie, professor of international business and professor of management at the George Washington University School of Business.

?Paying lip service to corporate responsibility is fashionable, of course, because it seems there are so many lapses, both large and small. Assessed individually they are frequently tales of greed gone bad; assessed globally, they reveal a pattern of abuse that undermines the social compact corporations have with their stockholders, consumers and society.?

The article also points to ethical corporate leaders who focus on social responsibility such as Ian M. Cook, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Colgate-Palmolive. Dr. Guthrie stresses that business schools play a critical role in instilling this quality in entrepreneurs.

?It has not always been this way in U.S. business schools. For the last 40 years our mission has been teaching students how to serve the bottom line first and foremost. Sadly, there were times we taught our students that the end result was more important than the means of how we got there.?

What ethical dilemmas and choices have you faced?and made?while establishing and running your business? What do you hope other entrepreneurs will learn as a result of these experiences?

A Few Thoughts About The Friend Zone | Miss Stang's World ...

I saw an image tonight on my friend?s FB page and it said ?Ladies, guys are sick of hearing you ask where all of the ?nice guys? are.? They?re in the ?friend zone? where you left them.?

I started thinking about all of the women that I?ve heard talk about how they didn?t want to get involved with a man because she didn?t want to ruin the friendship.? That doesn?t make any sense to me.? When I hear people say that, I tend to think that they are either not physically attracted to the person and are afraid to hurt their feelings, or they are not very comfortable with their own relationship skills.

I like to think that my lover is my best friend.? To me, my significant other should be the one that I share things with, enjoy doing things with and is my rock when things are getting tough.? My friends know more about men than someone I just meet and take the time to understand my quirky ways.? If a woman has a man in her life that does all of those things, why would she not want him as her lover?

Every relationship has the possibility of ending, be it a friendship or a romantic relationship. I think that so many women have been involved in bad relationships (I know men have too but I?m a woman and speaking from my own point of view), that it is easier to keep a guy in the friend zone.? See, if a man stays in the friend zone, a woman has the benefit of his company, his emotional support and consistent approval, without having to take the emotional risk that comes with being in a romantic relationship.

What tends to happen is, woman keep a guy in the friend zone, date some jackass that breaks her heart and then goes back to the friend zone to have him pick up the pieces.? I think that not only sounds selfish, but I also think that part of the reason the heart got broken is that the man she was dating didn?t respect the relationship the same way that the man in the friend zone does.? If this sounds like she wants her cake and eat it too, then that sounds just about right.

I am not saying that men and women cannot be friends, they can, they are plenty of men and women who are friends where neither of them is interested in the other romantically, and if that is the case then the above doesn?t apply.? I also know people who have maintained a platonic relationship with exes; I attribute that to the previous romantic relationship being built on a friendship.

I would say to the women that have men hovering around in the friend zone that you should take some time to evaluate the real reason that you keep those ?nice guys? in the friend zone.? Maybe the nice guy is not what you want; it?s what you think you want.

Oh and ladies, if a man is not physically attractive to you, just tell him. ?No, don?t come out and say that he?s ugly or whatever, but respect your friend by telling him the truth, you are not romantically interested in him. ?Let?s retire that lame ?I don?t want to ruin the relationship? madness, that phrase is right up there with ?it?s not you, it?s me?.

There was a song that once asked the magic question ?how can we be lovers if we can?t be friends??? Well?
