Cowboys owner Jerry Jones: NFL to Los Angeles 'as close as it ever has been'

OXNARD - Without putting an exact timeline on when the NFL might return to Los Angeles, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Saturday the reality of professional football returning to the City of Angels is as close as it's ever been.

"I say that not just wishing," Jones said. "I say that technically because I am aware of some things that make sense."

Jones would not elaborate, but seeing as he is one of the most influential owners in the NFL and his son sits on the league's stadium committee, his insight carries enormous weight.

"There are some viable ways for a team, or teams, to be in Los Angeles," Jones said. "And we've got some very talented, very qualified people who want to be a

part of it that are not a part of the league right now. And we've obviously got people within the league that want this very much."

Jones being one of them "" he was born in El Segundo and he still has family in the area.

The Cowboys owner is in Oxnard overseeing his club's training camp, which kicks off Sunday. And having spent many a summer between Oxnard and Thousand Oaks - the longtime former training camp home of the Cowboys "" he is keenly interested in the NFL returning to the second-biggest television market in the country.

And he dismisses any thought the NFL is simply using Los Angeles as leverage to motivate current NFL cities to build new stadiums for their teams.

"I've never, ever been a part of any meeting or committee, ever, that didn't want "" and as quickly as we could "" a team in L.A." Jones said. "I've heard the same thing - that (L.A.) can be (used) as a threat (for) teams moving out here and what have you. But that's not right.

"I can speak for everyone I've ever talked to, we always preferred to get a team here."

Currently there are two stadium in projects in Los Angeles prepared to lure an existing team here "" Phil Anschutz's Famers Field project adjacent to Staples Center and Ed Roski's City of Industry proposal.

Farmers Field, though, is seen as the preferred site within the NFL.

Jones praised Farmers Field and disagrees with reports that his league might be souring on it.

"I have no misgiving at all about it. It's an outstanding (project) with outstanding people involved in it," Jones said. "Philip Anschutz is an outstanding individual and would be an asset in any way to any group to (he's) involved with."

With the league hesitant to expand, a current team would have to agree to move to Los Angeles.

At this point, the St. Louis Rams, San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars are the most likely candidates.

Military conducts training exercises in and around Chicago

U.S. military personnel are conducting training exercises in and around Chicago through Thursday, including flying military helicopters in areas around downtown at night.

City agencies are providing support for the ?routine military training exercises,? according to a release from the city?s Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

Monday night, many Chicagoans wondered what military helicopters were doing downtown. They are part of the training exercises, a spokeswoman for the office said.

Military personnel including soldiers from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment--who fly and support military helicopters and specialize in nighttime operations?are among those involved in the ?realistic urban training,? said a spokeswoman for the 160th, which is headquartered in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The exercises also include other units under the U.S. Special Operations Command, based at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.

The training is designed to prepare military personnel for overseas deployments, according to the Army and the OEMC.

Although Chicagoans might see helicopters or other evidence of the exercises, ?The training sites have been carefully selected to minimize the impact on the daily routine of residents,? OEMC said in its release.

317 Power Words That'll Instantly Make You a Better Writer

Ever noticed how some writers have an uncanny ability to toy with your emotions?

Within the span of a few pages, you can go from shaking with excitement to bawling your eyes out to flying into a rage and throwing the book across the room. It?s the hallmark of great writing, proof of mastery of the craft, and the yardstick by which aspiring writers measure their work.

And it goes beyond storytelling.

Sure, taking the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride is essential in novels and short stories, but what about emails, resumes, blog posts, proposals? They?re all designed to influence the reader in some way. You want to pass along information, yes, but you also want the reader to feel a certain way about that information.

Maybe you want to impress them, get them excited, make them cautious, get them angry, encourage them to keep going, or any number of emotions. The better a job you do at making them feel, the more influential you are, and the better your chances of getting what you want.

So, you might wonder? how?

The world is full of people who can scribble down their ideas, but to bring those ideas to life, to make them take up residence in the mind of the reader, lurking in the background, tugging, pulling, and cajoling their emotions until they think and feel exactly as you want? That?s a rare skill indeed.

The good news is it can be yours. There?s even a shortcut.

How to Instantly Become a Better Writer

It?s simple:

Use power words.

Rather than describe what I mean, let?s deconstruct an example from the great Winston Churchill:

We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.

Inspiring, right?

Well, there was a lot on the line. Under attack from Germany, Britain was fighting for its survival, and somehow, someway, Churchill had to find a way to inspire his countrymen to greatness.

He chose words. Or, to be more accurate, power words.

Let?s take a look at the passage again, this time with all the power words underlined:

We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.

Each underlined word makes the audience feel something. In this case, Churchill intermixes words that cause fear, such as ?struggle,? ?tyranny,? and ?terror,? with words that cause hope, such as ?strength,? ?God,? and ?victory.? The last, in particular, is repeated over and over, practically drilling the emotion into the minds of the audience.

It?s no accident. Smart speakers, as well as their speechwriters, sprinkle their speeches with carefully-chosen power words, drawing the audience from one emotion to another as skillfully as any novelist or screenwriter.

Granted, that?s not all they do. The best writers use an entire tool chest of techniques to create emotion, and power words are only one such tool.

But there?s good news.

For beginning writers, power words are one of the easiest tools to master. Unlike many storytelling strategies which can take years of practice to master, you can start sprinkling power words into your writing, and you?ll notice an immediate lift in the quality of your prose.

All you lack is a list of power words to use, but of course, I have you covered there too.

For years now, every time I mentioned power words to my students, someone always asked:

?Where can I get a list? Is there a book I can buy??

Sadly, not that I?m aware of.? That?s why I created this list.

Slowly, over a period of several weeks, I catalogued all the power words that jumped out to me, organizing them into categories based on the emotion you want to create, so you can easily find the right word. Little League baseball: Ridley faces adversity in state-opening loss to Lionville

BRADFORD ? There are always bound to be bumps in the road when a team is making history.

Ridley Area Little League is quite aware of that. It lost its first game of the Section 8 tournament before roaring back with four straight wins to cement a spot in the Pennsylvania Little League tournament, the first time that an RALL team has made it to that point.

Looks like RALL will have to take that familiar road again after a 6-4 loss to Lionville in the states opener for both teams at the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford.

RALL needs a win today against North Pocono, a 13-1 loser to Warwick in its opener, to have a chance of advancing to the semifinals. RALL will send out Isaiah Payton, who worked an inning of relief Monday, as its starter. Lionville tangles with Warwick at 7 p.m.

To get to 2-0, Warwick will have to learn something from RALL?s downfall: Try to avoid Michael Rodriguez in any way, shape or form. Rodriguez was masterful on the mound for three innings, striking out six batters against a pair of walks and a Tyler Kehoe single. The scary part, though, was that he was even better at the plate.

Rodriguez parked solo home runs in the second and fourth innings, the latter on a line drive that smashed into the scoreboard in left field some 320 feet away. RALL couldn?t get away from the tall Rodriguez, who finished the day 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs to go with his tremendous pitching line.

Making things even easier on the mound for Rodriguez was the fact that his team never trailed. Joe Cestare led off the bottom of the first by taking Logan Keller?s offering over the left field wall and after Rodriguez singled, Joe Janick launched a moon shot to right field for a 3-0 lead. Five batters later, third baseman Zach Orris drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 4-0 before Rodriguez?s first home run an inning later left RALL staring down a five-run deficit.

?It was definitely (a) confidence (booster) because I knew I had the lead and I didn?t have to put that much stress on myself,? Rodriguez said. ?But I wasn?t surprised to see (RALL) battle back at all. I knew they had the fight in them.?

That fight to came to light when Rodriguez exited the game. Johnny DeMucci led off the fourth inning with a walk, and Matt Headley pushed him to third on a single. From there, Cole Dumont did the honors of breaking the string of goose eggs on the board by ripping a two-run double to left field that energized RALL.

?It was tough at first, but we?re a good enough team that we can come back from any deficit,? said Dumont, who also reached base when he was hit by a Rodriguez pitch. ?It really doesn?t matter how much we?re down by. We?re going to fight and do as well as we can to come back and win a baseball game.? Continued...

Rodriguez pushed the lead back to four with his majestic second home run in the bottom of the fourth, but RALL kept putting that fight on display an inning later when it sliced the four-run deficit in style. Second baseman Tim Campbell misplayed Kehoe?s hot smash to put the RALL leadoff man on, then Keller got a modicum of revenge by joining in on the home run derby. He laced a Cestare pitch over the left-field wall to make it 6-4.

?We?ve played games where we were down and we battled back,? Keller said. ?In sectionals, we were down 4-0 in the first inning and we scored eight runs. We?re just going to have to win the next two games and after that, we?ll go back and hopefully play (Lionville) in the championship.?

RALL looked taken aback when it fell into the 5-0 hole. A team that averages nearly 10 runs a game, the surprised looks on RALL?s young faces were understandable. Manager John DeMucci?s juggling of the pitching staff didn?t go like he?d hoped it would, especially with Keller having to throw 30 pitches to get out of the first inning, but today represents a chance to get things right again.

?It?s going to be tough,? said Kehoe, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored and struck out four in 22/3 strong innings of relief. ?We?re going to have to come back (today) and put up a couple runs. (The deficit) was a big shock. We made a couple mistakes in the field, but we bounced back.?

It seems to be a common theme for RALL.

Biden will focus on trade, security in India trip

NEW DELHI (AP) ? U.S. Vice President Joe Biden arrived in India on Monday on a trip that will focus on boosting trade and regional security ties and strengthening a strategic partnership that has languished in recent years.

Biden's four-day visit, which will include a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, is viewed as a major step in promoting President Barack Obama's focus on forging strong partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region aimed at counterbalancing China's power.

Biden and Indian leaders were expected to discuss hurdles to trade and restrictions on American companies doing business in the Indian marketplace.

Biden's first stop after his arrival was a ceremonial visit to a museum dedicated to Indian independence hero Mohandas Gandhi.

It is Biden's first trip to India as vice president. He visited New Delhi in 2008 as a senator.

During formal talks Tuesday, Biden and Indian officials will focus on ways to expand bilateral trade that currently stands at $100 billion, officials said.

In a speech in Washington on Thursday, Biden noted that trade between the countries had increased five-fold over the past 13 years, but there was no reason it should not expand five times as much again.

Despite the increasing trade, U.S. business groups have complained about the slow pace of economic reform in India and have urged New Delhi to open up its markets further. The Indian government in recent months has loosened rules governing foreign investment in some areas of the economy.

American businesses have been pressuring the Obama administration to press India for stronger intellectual property protection. New Delhi is expected to raise concerns about proposals in the U.S. Congress that would curb visas for high-tech Indian workers.

India and the United States will also discuss regional security, including efforts to end the conflict in Afghanistan.

The U.S. increasingly views India as a partner in developing Afghanistan, where New Delhi has provided $2 billion in assistance. Washington also wants India to play a more active role in training Afghan security forces as the U.S. and its NATO allies withdraw combat forces by 2014.

During the Cold War, relations between India and the United States were strained as America tilted toward India's arch-enemy Pakistan and India turned toward the Soviet Union. Relations have thawed since then, with New Delhi and Washington signing a defense cooperation pact in 2005 and ratifying a landmark civil nuclear agreement in 2008.

More recently, the Obama administration has reaffirmed India's role in its Asia-Pacific policy.

"Our goal is to help tie Asia-Pacific nations together ? from India to the Americas? through strong alliances, institutions and partnerships," Biden said in Washington last week.

However, Indian analysts said New Delhi would have its own questions over the new policy.

"When President Obama came up with his pivot to Asia policy, it was widely welcomed in India. Because the pivot was seen as an effort to create a balance against very aggressive Chinese policies," said Lalit Mansingh, a former Indian ambassador to the United States.

"Then the Americans moderated it by calling it a rebalance. And they have further diluted it by saying it is not meant against China," he said.

"India would have liked a more vigorous stand on China where its security interests will be protected. So, this will be one of the issues India would like to discuss," Mansingh said.

Biden will be accompanied during the visit by his wife, Jill, who will visit a U.S. supported public health program in Agra and then tour the nearby Taj Mahal.

The Bidens will then head to Mumbai, where the vice president will meet business leaders before heading for Singapore on Thursday.
