Knox pleads with Italian court to free her (AP)

PERUGIA, Italy ? Amanda Knox tearfully told an Italian appeals court Monday she did not kill her British roommate, pleading for the court to free her so she can return to the United States after four years behind bars. Moments later, the court began deliberations.

Knox frequently paused for breath and fought back tears as she spoke in Italian to the eight members of the jury in a packed courtroom, but managed to maintain her composure during the 10-minute address.

"I've lost a friend in the worst, most brutal, most inexplicable way possible," she said of the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old Briton who shared an apartment with Knox when they were both students in Perugia. "I'm paying with my life for things that I didn't do."

Knox and co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito, Knox's former boyfriend from Italy, were convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting and murdering Kercher, who was stabbed to death in her bedroom. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison, Sollecito to 25. They both deny wrongdoing.

"I never hurt anyone, never in my life," Sollecito said Monday in his own speech to the jury.

Presiding Judge Claudio Pratillo Hellmann said the jury would not emerge before 1800 GMT (2 p.m. EDT) at the earliest.

Kercher's mother, sister and a brother are expected to be in court for the ruling. They have expressed worry over the possibility of acquittal.

"The lower court found the defendants guilty. The Kercher family's interest is to have the verdict confirmed," family lawyer Francesco Maresca said Monday.

The highly anticipated verdict will be broadcast live. Hundreds of reporters and camera crews filled the underground, frescoed courtroom before Knox's address on Monday, while police outside cordoned off the entrance to the tribunal.

The trial has captivated audiences worldwide: Knox, the 24-year-old American, and Sollecito, a soft-spoken Italian, were convicted of murdering a fellow student in what the lower court said had begun as a drug-fueled sexual assault.

Knox insisted Monday that she had nothing to do with the murder and that Kercher was a friend who was always nice to her. Gesticulating, at times clasping her hands together, the American said she has always wanted justice for Kercher.

"She had her bedroom next to mine, she was killed in our own apartment. If I had been there that night, I would be dead," Knox said. "But I was not there."

"I did not kill. I did not rape. I did not steal. I wasn't there," Knox said.

Also convicted in separate proceedings was Rudy Hermann Guede, a small-time drug dealer and drifter who spent most of his life in Italy after arriving here from his native Ivory Coast. Guede was convicted in a separate fast-track procedure and saw his sentence cut to 16 years in his final appeal.

Knox said she had nothing more than a passing acquaintance with Guede, who played basketball in a court near the house, and didn't even know his name. Sollecito, who addressed the court before Knox, told jurors that he did not know Guede at all.

Sollecito was anxious as he addressed the court, shifting as he spoke and stopping to sip water. He said prior to the Nov. 1, 2007 murder was a happy time for him, he was close to defending his thesis to graduate from university and had just met Knox.

The weekend Kercher was murdered was the first the pair planned to spend together "in tenderness and cuddles," he said.

At the end of his 17-minute address, Sollecito took off a white rubber bracelet emblazoned with "Free Amanda and Raffaele" that he said he was been wearing for four years.

"I have never taken it off. Many emotions are concentrated in this bracelet," he said. "Now I want to pay homage to the court. The moment to take it off has arrived."

Knox and her family, present in Perugia, hope she will be set free after spending four years behind bars caught up in what they say is a monumental judicial mistake. Prosecutors, who have depicted Knox as a manipulative liar, are seeking to increase her sentence to life in prison.

The jury is made up of the presiding judge, a side judge and six jurors, five of them women, and they have several options as they go into deliberations. They can acquit both defendants and set them free. They can uphold the conviction, then confirm the sentence, reduce it or increase it. They can theoretically decide to split the fate of Knox and Sollecito, convicting one and acquitting the other.

Over the course of the appeals trial, the defendants' positions have significantly improved, mainly because a court-ordered independent review cast serious doubts over the main DNA evidence linking the two to the crime.

Prosecutors maintain that Knox's DNA was found on the handle of a kitchen knife believed to be the murder weapon, and that Kercher's DNA was found on the blade. They said Sollecito's DNA was on the clasp of Kercher's bra as part of a mix of evidence that also included the victim's genetic profile.

But the independent review ? ordered at the request of the defense, which had always disputed those findings ? reached a different conclusion.

The two experts found that police conducting the investigation had made glaring errors in evidence-collecting and that below-standard testing and possible contamination raised doubts over the attribution of DNA traces, both on the blade and on the bra clasp, which was collected from the crime scene 46 days after the murder.

The review was crucial in the case because no motive has emerged and witness testimony was contradictory. It was a huge boost for the defense's hope and a potentially fatal blow for the prosecution.

The prosecutors, however, refute the review and stand by their original conclusions.

German museum returning Namibian skulls (AP)

BERLIN ? The skulls of 20 Namibians were returned to tribal leaders Friday, more than a century after they were taken by German colonial forces for racial experiments.

The hanover of the skulls was a rare reminder of Germany's short-lived past as a colonial power in Africa, which included the bloody suppression of a Herero and Nama uprising between 1904 and 1908 that left tens of thousands dead.

The heads of four females and 16 males, including a young boy of about three, were removed from their bodies and preserved in formaldehyde intact with faces, skin and hair.

Researchers say the skulls do not show any sign of violence, and it is not clear how the people died, though they were possibly victims of German forces in Namibia at the time, or died in a German-run camp.

Once the remains arrived in Berlin, between 1909-1914, scientists tried to prove the "racial superiority" of white Europeans over black Africans by analyzing the facial features of the heads, said Thomas Schnalke, the head of the Berlin Medical Historical Museum.

In the 1920s, the heads were further dissected until only the skulls remained.

Karl Max Einhaeupl, the chairman of the board of Berlin's Charite University, apologized for the injustice done to the Namibians at the time.

"By returning the human remains, Charite wants to show its respect and help honor the memory of the victims," Einhaeupl said. "We deeply regret the crimes which were committed back then ... and want to sincerely apologize for it."

Some of the Namibian representatives had been hoping for an official apology from Germany for the colonial period, and were disappointed that they did not get one during the visit.

"The German government totally ignored us," Katuutire Kaura, a Namibian member of parliament told the dapd news agency after the ceremony.

Others booed when German Foreign Ministry representative Cornelia Pieper talked at the ceremony, but did not deliver an official apology, even though she offered her own "deepest sympathy and shame."

The Namibian government first asked for the return of the skulls in 2008, but it took several years to identify their origin.

A delegation of 73 Namibian tribal leaders, government members and journalists arrived in Berlin earlier this week to receive the 9 Herero and 11 Nama skulls, and attended several ceremonies.

On Thursday, Germans and Namibians came together for a religious ceremony at Berlin's St. Matthew's Church. The 20 skulls were laid out in front of the altar, 18 of them in cardboard boxes draped with the Namibian flag, and two others in glass boxes facing the audience. Several members of the Namibian delegation stepped forward during the service to bow in front of the skulls, singing songs, reading prayers and crying as they begged farewell.

"Today our hearts ache, but as we weep and condemn the evil, we are also grateful to restore the honor and dignity of our ancestors," Neville Gertze, the Ambassador of the Republic of Namibia in Germany said during the church service.

According to Schnalke, Berlin's 7,000-skull collection may contain some more Namibian skulls, but so far these could not yet be identified with certainty.

The museum will continue working on the identification and repatriate further remains once the results have come in, he said.

In order to identify the skulls, scientists at Berlin's Charite University look at inscriptions on the skulls, see if they were catalogued at the time and whether there were any academic publications from the 1910s or 1920s referring to them, Schnalke said, adding that no DNA tests were carried out and that the scientists tried to treat the human remains as respectfully as possible.

Berlin's Charite University a few years ago also signed a letter of intent with the Australian government to return the skulls of 18 Australian Aborigines, but so far their identification has not yet been concluded.

The museum's efforts to return the skulls were supported by the German government, which has committed to help coordinate future efforts to return any other Namibian skulls that might be identified in the future, the German Foreign Office said in a statement.

MINDSET -?Christian Pondella: Skier, Climber, Photographer. In that order.

Mammoth Lakes, CA

Action sports are still evolving as quickly as ever and the ski industry is no exception. As a photographer for Red Bull and senior photographer for Powder Magazine, Christian Pondella has had an eye on the evolution for nearly twenty years. His energizing work is legendary in the outdoor and action sports worlds, but when it comes down to it, the man just likes to ski. In the meantime he?s pushing the sport to a whole new level.

Skier: Arne Backstrom Location: North Face - AiguilleDu Midi - Chamonix, France

Ever since I started taking skiing seriously, ski mountaineering has been my passion. I was 19 or 20 when I started getting into the backcountry. I was skiing with a bunch of older guys at the time who were always out touring. They turned me on to the backcountry at an early age and that?s when I started skiing 14,000-foot peaks.

PONDELLA CHX 2010 6870 620x413 Ski NewsI was spending hours in the darkroom with this photography class I was taking. My friends were studying economics and majoring in business, but I wasn?t into that heavy schoolwork type-a-stuff. When I graduated I didn?t graduate with the idea ? I want to be a photographer. I was young and just enjoyed taking photos for fun.

Ironically, after school, I moved to Mammoth. I was a ski bum?waiting tables, skiing everyday and climbing as much as I could.

I was out skiing by myself one stormy day on Lincoln Mountain. I happened to be skiing laps with this one guy who was a ripping skier. About halfway into the day we?re on a chairlift and I?m like, ?What do you do?? He says, ?I?m the photo editor for Powder Magazine.?

PONDELLA CHX 2010 6441 620x413 Ski News

Reddick has been the photo editor the whole time. He?s the one constant at the magazine. I sent him some photos and he gave me some advice and some good critique on the images. My first published photo was skiing the Red Slate Couloir. From the get-go my career was always kind of ski mountaineering based.

It was a breakthrough for myself and my good friend Hans Ludwig ? who?s a writer and moved to Mammoth close to the same time I did. Hans ended up writing the story and they did a feature in the following issue on 3 or 4 of our backcountry trips. Since then both of our careers have taken off. Now he?s one of the editors for Powder Magazine.

When I started backcountry skiing it was Secure Fixes, alpine boots and Kastle 213?s. I can?t tell you how many hundreds of miles I?ve skinned in Secure Fixes. Totally brutal. I remember skiing with Glen Plake and Daryn Johnson 15-18 years ago and those guys were on homemade bindings and converting their Raichle?s into ski mountaineering boots. Finally ski manufacturers are figuring it out and making high performance gear to get out in the mountains in a safer, better way.

The light went off in my head?? wow, I?m getting paid to do what I would be doing even if I weren?t getting paid to do it. When Chris Davenport was working on his Ski the 14ers project in Colorado, I went out there 3 different times to photograph it. Even though I had already been making a living as a photographer that was a defining moment?back in Colorado, skiing 14,000-foot peaks?back where it all started for me.

PONDELLA CHX 2010 1454 620x413 Ski News

Skier: Seth Morrison Location: Chamonix, France

I?ve been told that ski mountaineering is the biggest growing aspect of the sport right now. Ten years ago the big craze was twin tips, jibbing and park skiing. There was a huge focus on it, but the reality is, not many people do that in the ski world. When you look at the big picture of skiing, especially when you go to Europe ? and it?s starting to take off here ? everyone ski tours. I think it?s something that relates to a bigger market. It?s a bigger aspect of the sport that more people can actually do.

I stare at the mountains from my house. Having the Sierras in my backyard is key for what I do.? More recently we?ve been into doing bigger, longer, faster days. Whether with John Morrison or the Mammoth Crew, we?re doing big days in the Sierra that 10-15 years ago would have been overnight trips. Were more into pushing ourselves physically and mentally sometimes doing 9,000 to10,000-foot days.

The people I?m skiing with aren?t into setting up all these shots ? we?re more into just getting out and skiing. A lot of times I only bring a small body and one camera lens. I don?t have a whole bunch of extra weight and that allows me to stay fast and mobile and shoot from the hip per se.

PONDELLA CHX 2010 6990 620x930 Ski News

I probably ski without a camera more than I should, considering that?s how I make a living, but you have to keep it balanced. Bottom line is: I just love to ski.
