News Corp publisher's books linked to paper from endangered rainforests: RAN

JAKARTA (Reuters) - HarperCollins, a division of News Corp, has been accused by a conservation group of using materials sourced from Indonesia's endangered rainforests.

Independent forensic fiber tests commissioned by the Rainforest Action Network (RAN), showed that some of HarperCollins' children's books were printed with rainforest fiber.

Indonesia has some of the world's most biologically diverse forests and is home to endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger.

"No child or parent should become an unwitting participant in rainforest destruction this holiday season," said Robin Averbeck, a forest campaigner at RAN.

Averbeck called on HarperCollins not to do business with Indonesian paper firms Asia Pacific Resources International (APRIL) and Asia Pulp and Paper Co Ltd (APP). APP has been accused by other green groups of destroying rainforests.

A spokesman for HarperCollins said the company shares the goals of environmentally sustainable fiber use and the company has policies to support these goals.

The U.S. publisher had requested information from RAN, including results of the tests, which the green group has refused to share, said Erin Crum, vice president of corporate communications at HarperCollins. Crum said HarperCollins has worked with its printers and mills to eliminate the use of Indonesian fiber from books and that all books manufactured after February 2012 were compliant.

"We call on RAN to share its data and findings with us so we can address any anomalies in our supply chain if they exist and we are instituting a testing regime with an independent lab to ensure our that our books are meeting our policy goals," Crum said.

Officials at APP declined to comment. Officials at APRIL did not respond to multiple telephone calls and emails from Reuters seeking comment.

APP and APRIL "are indeed the main culprits here and it's good to be clear about that, but as they have not proven very responsive to direct pressure, we are forced to go after their customers to get them to take rainforest destruction seriously and HarperCollins is the sole major U.S. publisher remaining who has not made a firm commitment to stop doing business with them," RAN spokesman Laurel Sutherlin said.

"Most people have never heard of these companies and do not realize they are buying products produced by them, but they do recognize companies like Disney and HarperCollins who are supporting their destructive business practices by purchasing from them."

APP operates under the Sinar Mas brand, as does palm oil giant Sinar Mas Agro Resources & Technology, which has in the past been accused by Greenpeace of bulldozing high conservation value forests and damaging carbon-rich peatlands.

APRIL in October disputed many of the accusations against it said it does not source illegally harvested wood and does not source wood from high conservation value forests.

The Rainforest Action Network said HarperCollins lagged other U.S. publishers like Walt Disney Co, the world's biggest publisher of children's books, when it came to instituting corporate programs to help protect the world's rainforests.

In October, Disney changed its purchasing policies to reduce paper use and avoid paper harvested from endangered forests.

Indonesia is seen as a key player in the fight against climate change and is under intense international pressure to curb deforestation and the destruction of carbon-rich peatlands.

Last year, Greenpeace said it had evidence that Barbie doll packaging came from Indonesian rainforests, accusing toy manufacturers such as Mattel Inc and Walt Disney of contributing to Indonesia's deforestation.

Forests in the archipelago have also come under threat from the expanding palm oil industry in recent years, which green groups also blame for deforestation, speeding up climate change and destroying wildlife.

Indonesia is the world's top producer of palm oil, used mainly as an ingredient in food such as biscuits and ice cream and as a biofuel.

To improve its green credentials, Indonesia signed a two-year forest moratorium in May last year, although critics say breaches still occur.

Mitt Romney Attends Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez Boxing Match

LAS VEGAS -- Defeated presidential candidate Mitt Romney was a guest ringside Saturday night at the fourth fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Romney also visited with Pacquiao in his dressing room before the fight, wishing him well in the bout.

"Hello Manny. I ran for president. I lost," Romney told the fighter, according to Pacquiao publicist Fred Sternburg.

Pacquiao is a congressman in the Philippines, and has said previously he might run one day for the president of his country.

Romney and his wife, Ann, were guests of Nevada State Athletic Commission chairman Bill Brady at the fight at the MGM Grand hotel arena. Brady hosted a fundraiser for Romney during the presidential campaign.

The Romneys arrived during the undercard, drawing little reaction from the crowd.

Use These Personal Training Fitness Tips For A Healthy Life ...

December 9, 2012 ‐ Posted by Fitness Tips ‐ Under: Fitness Tips

Many people avoid making goals for fitness workouts when losing weight because they aren?t sure where to start and they lack the necessary motivation. As luck would have it, there are a lot of enjoyable exercise options out there. You just have to find the ones that work for you. Exercising does not have to be a drag. Look for ways to make your exercise routine so much fun that you look forward to doing it. Use the information in this piece to turn your exercise routine into something fun, rather than something you dread.

An easy way to get your body moving is to crank up some great music. No one can resist dancing to an infectious beat or and addictive song blasting on the radio. You really need to incorporate music you enjoy into your exercise program. Pop in a CD, load your favorite playlist onto your iPod, or listen to the radio and dance the weight away! Music can lift your spirits and give you the extra push you need to follow through with your fitness goals.

TIP! Fear is what stops you? courages is what keeps you going. -Unknown

Invite one friend or more to join you in your exercise. If exercise becomes a fun social activity, you are more likely to enjoy yourself and feel that your workout sessions fly by. You will forget about the pain of working out if you have friends to talk to.

To emphasize the most entertaining part of your workout, seek what sort of fitness titles are available for your video game console. Lots of cool video games are out there that can aid you in fitness and weight loss. The obvious advantage of enjoying your workouts so much is that you will want to go longer and harder.

Clothing has a lot do with your motivation, if you have athletic clothing on you will feel the need to fit the part. Putting on your workout clothes can get you in the proper mindset and help focus you on your exercise goals. If you buy clothes that are designed for working out, your exercise routine will be easier and more enjoyable, making the clothing well worth the expense.

TIP! I?d rather be a failure at something I enjoy than a success at something I hate. -George Burns

Stay away from repetition in your exercise routine. Switch it up as much as possible. Productivity is affected by boredom. Without the proper motivation, you might stop altogether. Changing a workout routine around regularly is a good idea to keep things fresh. This is a great way to maintain your motivation over the long haul. By allowing yourself to cease working out, you put yourself at risk of eliminating the benefits you have already achieved.

Treat yourself a kid and set small muscle fitness programs and reward yourself once you reach a certain stage of your body fitness . These little things do play a lot on a persons mind. Don?t worry, it doesn?t have to be expensive or elaborate. Maybe you?d like to reward yourself with a little bit of chocolate, or maybe buying a DVD you?ve been dying to see. Whatever your reward might be, you should look forward to receiving it as soon as you hit your goal. You have to keep yourself focused and motivated if you want to reach your goals.

Correction: People-PSY-Protests story

In a story Dec. 7 about the South Korean rapper PSY, The Associated Press erroneously reported the date of a charity concert where the singer is slated to perform. The concert is Sunday, Dec. 9, not Dec. 21. It will be broadcast on TNT on Dec. 21.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Viral rapper PSY apologizes for anti-US protests

PSY apologizes for anti-US protests; says they were 'deeply emotional' reaction to Iraq war

By CHRIS TALBOTT

AP Music Writer

South Korean rapper and Internet sensation PSY is apologizing to Americans for participating in anti-U.S. protests several years ago.

Park Jae-sang, who performs as PSY, issued a statement Friday after reports surfaced that he had participated in concerts protesting the U.S. military presence in South Korea during the early stages of the Iraq war.

At a 2004 concert, the "Gangnam Style" rapper performs a song with lyrics about killing "Yankees" who have been torturing Iraqi captives and their families "slowly and painfully." During a 2002 concert, he smashed a model of a U.S. tank on stage.

"While I'm grateful for the freedom to express one's self, I've learned there are limits to what language is appropriate and I'm deeply sorry for how these lyrics could be interpreted," he wrote in the statement. "I will forever be sorry for any pain I have caused by those words."

The 34-year-old rapper says the protests were part of a "deeply emotional" reaction to the war and the death of two Korean school girls, who were killed when a U.S. military vehicle hit them as they walked alongside the road. He noted anti-war sentiment was high around the world at the time.

PSY attended college in the U.S. and says he understands the sacrifices U.S. military members have made to protect South Korea and other nations. He has recently performed in front of servicemen and women.

"And I hope they and all Americans can accept my apology," he wrote. "While it's important that we express our opinions, I deeply regret the inflammatory and inappropriate language I used to do so. In my music, I try to give people a release, a reason to smile. I have learned that thru music, our universal language we can all come together as a culture of humanity and I hope that you will accept my apology."

His participation in the protests was no secret in South Korea, where the U.S. has had a large military presence since the Korean War, but was not generally known in America until recent news reports.

PSY did not write "Dear American," a song by the Korean band N.EX.T, but he does perform it. The song exhorts the listener to kill the Yankees who are torturing Iraqi captives, their superiors who ordered the torture and their families. At one point he raps: "Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law, and fathers/Kill them all slowly and painfully."

PSY launched to international acclaim based on the viral nature of his "Gangnam Style" video. It became YouTube's most watched video, making him a millionaire who freely crossed cultural boundaries around the world. Much of that success has happened in the U.S., where the rapper has managed to weave himself into pop culture.

He recently appeared on the American Music Awards, dancing alongside MC Hammer in a melding of memorable dance moves that book-end the last two decades. And the Internet is awash with copycat versions of the song. Even former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson, the 81-year-old co-chairman of President Barack Obama's deficit commission, got in on the fun, recently using the song in a video to urge young Americans to avoid credit card debt.

It remains to be seen how PSY's American fans will react. Obama, the father of two pop music fans, wasn't letting the news change his plans, though.

Earlier Friday, the White House confirmed Obama and his family will attend a Dec. 9 charity concert where PSY is among the performers. A spokesman says it's customary for the president to attend the "Christmas in Washington" concert, which will be broadcast Dec. 21 on TNT. The White House has no role in choosing performers for the event, which benefits the National Children's Medical Center.

DeSoto Family Loses Home, Pets in Fire - Fox 4

DESOTO, Kan. ? Fire destroyed a DeSoto, Kansas, home early Wednesday morning ? killing several animals but leaving a mother and her son unharmed.

According to authorities, fire was reported at a home in the 8800 block of Waverly Road around 2:25 a.m. Cheri Schuler and her oldest son were sleeping inside the home at the time. They escaped the fire after being alerted by another son who came home and saw flames.

Firefighters say that the homeowner, a veterinarian, managed to save four dogs, but one of Cheri?s beloved bulldogs didn?t make it. Several other animals were killed in the fire including a parrot and a snake. A cat is still unaccounted for.

?It breaks my heart we couldn?t save them all, but I couldn?t see, I couldn?t breath, I was crawling but couldn?t see or breath, so I had to get out,? said Cheri. ?Most importantly my family is okay.?

Cheri?s husband Jason was working in New Jersey at the time, but he jumped on the first plane home Wednesday.

At Wanda?s Roadside Cafe in DeSoto, Wanda Riedheart says everyone in town is talking about the sad loss and wanting to do what they can to help.

?We got their back, they are so loved in this town,? she said. ?They?re the most awesome family and I want them to know it?s time we pay them back some and show them some kindness.?

Cheri said she?s happy to hear that and she?s grateful for so many good friends and family and co-workers who have been so supportive. But she especially wanted to thank police and fire.

?Because they both helped us out a lot,? she said while tearing up. ?As far as help, we don?t need anything else because we?re just looking for a place to rent right now until we can rebuild here or whatever we?re going to do, we haven?t made that decision yet.?

Cheri also wanted to thank the Red Cross for its help and her State Farm agent in Eudora who worked fast and got her a check within hours of calling him.

(AP) ? Get your garlic, crosses and stakes ready: a bloodsucking vampire is on the loose.

Or so say villagers in the tiny western Serbian hamlet of Zarozje, nestled between lush green mountain slopes and spooky thick forests. They say that rumors that a legendary vampire ghost has awakened are spreading fear ? and a potential tourist opportunity ? through the remote village.

A local council warned villagers to put garlic in their pockets and place wooden crosses in their rooms to ward off vampires, although it appeared designed more to attract visitors to the impoverished region bordering Bosnia.

Many of the villagers are aware that Sava Savanovic, Serbia's most famous vampire, is a fairy tale. Still, they say, better to take it seriously than risk succumbing to the vampire's fangs.

"The story of Sava Savanovic is a legend, but strange things did occur in these parts back in the old days," said 55-year-old housewife Milka Prokic, holding a string of garlic in one hand and a large wooden stake in another, as an appropriately moody mist rose above the surrounding hills. "We have inherited this legend from our ancestors, and we keep it alive for the younger generations."

Vampire legends have played a prominent part in the Balkans for centuries ? most prominently Dracula from Romania's Transylvania region. In the 18th century, the legends sometimes triggered mass hysteria and even public executions of those accused of being vampires.

Sava Savanovic, described by the Zarozje villagers as Serbia's first vampire, reputedly drank the blood of those who came to the small shack in the dense oak tree forest to mill their grain on the clear mountain Rogatica river.

The wooden mill collapsed a few months ago ? allegedly angering the vampire, who is now looking for a new place to hang his cape.

Some locals claim they can hear steps cracking dry forest leaves and strange sounds coming from the rocky mountain peaks where the vampire was purportedly killed with a sharp stake that pierced his heart ? but managed to survive in spirit as a butterfly.

"One should always remain calm, it's important not to frighten him, you shouldn't make fun of him," said villager Mico Matic, 56, whose house is not far from the collapsed mill.

"He is just one of the neighbors, you do your best to be on friendly terms with him," he said with a wry smile, displaying garlic from both of his trouser pockets.

Some locals say it's easy for strangers to laugh at them, but they truly believe.

"Five people have recently died one after another in our small community, one hanging himself," said Miodrag Vujetic, a local municipal council member. "This is not by accident."

Vujetic, however, said that "whatever is true about Sava," locals should use the legend to promote tourism.

"If Romanians could profit on the Dracula legend with the tourists visiting Transylvania, why can't we do the same with Sava?"

Richard Sugg, a lecturer in Renaissance Studies at the U.K.'s University of Durham and an expert on the vampire legends, said the fear could be very real. Stress can bring on nightmares, which makes people's feelings of dread even worse.

"The tourists think it is fun ? and the Serbian locals think it's terrifying," he said.
