Foul play suspected in Maine girl's disappearance (AP)

PORTLAND, Maine ? Crime scene investigators returned to the central Maine home from which a 20-month-old girl disappeared as police announced that they believe foul play was involved.

Two weeks after Ayla Reynolds went missing, evidence technicians from Massachusetts joined Maine State Police crime scene investigators on Friday at the Waterville home where the girl was last seen by her father. The home 75 miles north of Portland now sits empty, surrounded by yellow crime scene tape.

Hours later, Waterville police Chief Joseph Massey announced Friday night that the case "has evolved from the search for a missing child to a criminal investigation."

In a statement, the chief said the conclusion was based on evidence that has been gathered over the past two weeks, but he didn't elaborate. He said state police would take the lead on the investigation.

"All of our efforts continue to locate Ayla. Although this is beginning the third week, we remain hopeful," Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

Ayla's father, Justin DiPietro, told police he last saw her when he put her to bed the night of Dec. 16. He reported her missing when she was nowhere to be found the following morning.

Before she vanished, Ayla was wearing green polka dot pajamas with the words "Daddy's Princess" on them and had a soft cast on her broken left arm. Extensive searches of woods, waterways, fields and private properties around Waterville, a city of 16,000 residents, have failed to turn up anything.

The day after Christmas, investigators announced a $30,000 reward, the largest ever for a missing person case in Maine, for information leading to Ayla's whereabouts.

McCausland on Friday declined to discuss whether any of the 300-plus leads had borne fruit for investigators. He also declined to talk about suspects or evidence that has been gathered. He said DiPietro and Ayla's mother, Trista Reynolds, of Portland, were cooperating with investigators.

There were news reports Friday that two cars seized from the Waterville home were returned to DiPietro and an unidentified woman. McCausland declined to confirm those reports.

Investigators put up crime scene tape at the father's home last week. Outside the home, teddy bears and stuffed animals were piled at a makeshift shrine.

Ayla was placed in her father's care while her mother was in a substance abuse rehabilitation program, which she completed.

Trista Reynolds, making an appeal on national television on Thursday, said that she had questions for DiPietro but that he had not returned her calls since their daughter went missing. She previously raised concerns about Ayla's treatment while in her father's care after the girl broke her arm, an incident described by police as an accident. She had no further comment Friday night, her sister said.

DiPietro couldn't be reached for comment. The Associated Press has been unable to find a telephone listing for him, and the house where he stayed is now empty.

A few days before Christmas, DiPietro, addressing the public for the first time, said in a statement he had "no idea what happened to Ayla or who is responsible." Later, in another statement, he said, "I would never do anything to hurt my child."

Former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt said Friday that the odds of finding a child lessen if he or she isn't found within the first day or two of disappearing. But he said there's always reason for optimism, noting that there are even rare cases of missing children who turn up years later in someone's care.

"If you don't get this child back real quickly, you know that it gets harder and harder," he said. "But you can't give up hope."

Scott Bernstein, founder of Child Recovery International, a New York City-based organization that helps find missing children, agreed the first hours of an investigation are key in tracking down missing children as young as Ayla. Although the situation looks bleak, there's still room for hope, he said.

"One percent hope ? but I'll go for that 1 percent hope," he said.

After Ayla went missing, law enforcement officials likely divided their investigation into two parts, one team looking at people with access to her, such as relatives and family friends, and another group looking at the potential for an abduction by an outsider or stranger, Van Zandt said. Under both scenarios, he said, the odds are that the person who took Ayla knew something about her or her family.

Strangers' abductions of children do occur, but they're rare, accounting for only 105 to 115 children out of 750,000 to 900,000 missing-persons cases each year in the United States, Van Zandt said.

Van Zandt, who has worked similar cases, said Ayla's disappearance, which once had more than 80 searchers and law enforcement officers involved, has been difficult for law enforcers as well as for distraught family members.

"As an FBI agent working these cases, you never turn off the emotional porch light," he said. "You always leave on the light with the hope that the child will come home again."

Analysts Revved Up for Automotive Industry in 2012 (NYSE:WFC ...

Scottrade: $7 Online Trades. Real-Time Stock Quotes

Eleven independent analysts forecast an average sales figure of 13.6 million light vehicles in 2012. The prediction would be an increase of 6-7% over this year depending on how 2011 wraps up. The spike in auto sales is attributed to rising employment, increasing credit availability, new products and aging vehicles currently driven by Americans. If, and that?s a big IF, consumers meet these expectations, that will be great news for shareholders of General Motors (NYSE:GM), Ford (NYSE:F), Toyota Motors (NYSE:TM), and Honda Motor Company (NYSE:HMC).

Don?t Miss: Iran Threatens to Block Oil Flow Through Vital Strait of Hormuz in Response to U.S. Sanctions.

Though the most conservative estimate of 13 million by Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) is a full million less than the loftiest of 14 million by Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), the spread is still narrower than the 1.5 million difference in 2011 predictions. Analysts predict just as much economic bad news in 2012, but believe consumers are less skittish than they were three years ago when the recession began.

Automotive News quoted Alec Gutierrez, Senior Market Analyst for Kelley Blue Book, who said, ?The Dow fell 1,500 points ? and car sales stayed smooth and consistent. The American consumer has seen so much gone wrong. If they have to buy a car, they will.?

While a European recession is possible in 2012, it could possibly be outweighed by an American economic surge. Jeff Schuster, a forecaster for the Americas for LMC Automotive, says that the more telling factors will be pent-up demand, a growing inventory, and credit availability.? The average age of vehicles on the road is currently 10.7 years, up from 8 or 9 over the past decade according to Tom Kontos, Executive Vice President of Customer Strategies and Analytics for auction house ADESA. ?Americans have gone without for a very long time.? ?I need a car? is the biggest reason for optimism,? Kontos said per Automotive News.

Verizon to add $2 bill-pay charge, admits 4G network issues (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Verizon Wireless, which this month angered customers with three separate data service problems, said on Thursday it will add a $2 fee for one-time telephone and online bill payments.

The planned change, to take effect on January 15, was greeted by a storm of criticism.

Consumer blog Engadget said charging customers to pay was "downright ludicrous." Another tech website, cnet.com, said the move "made little sense."

"The fee is designed to address costs incurred by us for only those customers who choose to make one-time bill payments in alternate payment channels (online, mobile, telephone) and who choose not to use the other options available to them ...," Verizon Wireless spokesman Thomas Pica said in an email.

Verizon Wireless rivals AT&T Inc and Sprint Nextel Corp said they do not charge their customers for any bill-payment options.

In addition, some customers complained on Verizon's online forum on Thursday about problems activating their new phones.

The episode followed reports of a problem with the company's high-speed network on Wednesday. Verizon said on Thursday that it had resolved that issue overnight.

"GROWING PAINS" WITH 4G NETWORK

Verizon, the biggest U.S. mobile service provider, admitted on Thursday it was having "growing pains" with its new fourth generation, 4G, high-speed wireless network and had suffered several separate technical problems that caused service outages.

After saying earlier in the day that services on its older third generation, 3G, network were not affected, the company admitted Thursday night that 3G customers were also affected.

Verizon said it had proactively "moved" its fourth-generation (4G) wireless users onto its third-generation (3G) network to ensure all would have a data connection.

However, Verizon admitted that for brief periods, such as on Wednesday, 4G customers could not connect to the 3G Network as quickly as the company would have liked.

The company also said that it is working closely with its network suppliers to ensure smooth functioning of its 4G network, while estimating that connectivity has been available at about 99 percent of the time this year.

Verizon Wireless statement is available at:

http://r.reuters.com/wav75s

Some customers had earlier complained that they were having 3G service problems, while others said their 4G service was being restored on Thursday morning. One person complained about the lack of a public announcement.

"At least acknowledge there is a problem, do you really expect your paying customers to not notice??" one person wrote on Verizon's online message board.

Verizon Wireless spokesman Thomas Pica told Reuters that the company does not plan to compensate its customers who had experienced service problems.

Earlier this month the company, which has long boasted that its service is "most reliable," faced two data service problems.

On December 8 some Verizon customers were unable to access the Internet on their wireless devices for about 24 hours. The company had to fix another problem on December 21.

Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc.

Latinos unhappy with President Obama's deportation policy, poll finds

Reporting from Washington?

Latinos by a 2-1 margin disapprove of how President Obama is handling deportations of illegal residents, but by an even larger margin, Latino voters favor him over Mitt Romney, according to a new survey by the Pew Hispanic Center.

The Obama administration has presided over a record number of deportations of illegal residents, a policy that has drawn extensive criticism from Latino leaders. By 59% to 27%, Latinos ? citizens and noncitizens ? say they disapprove of how the administration is handling the issue, according to the poll, released Wednesday.

Obama's overall approval rating among all Latinos in the survey was 49% ? a figure consistent with findings of other recent surveys and a sharp decline from his standing earlier in his administration.

However, that disapproval does not appear to have spilled over to how Latinos expect to vote. Among the registered voters in the survey, Obama led Romney in a hypothetical matchup by 68% to 23% ? about the same margin by which Obama defeated John McCain among Latino voters in 2008, according to exit polls. The other Republican tested, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, did no better, losing to Obama in the hypothetical matchup 69% to 23%.

Republicans have been hoping that disapproval of Obama's policies would erode support for the president among Latinos, whose backing he cannot afford to lose.

But some Republican strategists have worried that their hopes of converting Latino voters would be blocked by the strong anti-illegal-immigrant positions that Romney and other GOP hopefuls have taken. The poll indicates those fears could be well-grounded. Asked which of the two parties has more concern for them, only 12% of Latinos surveyed cited the GOP, while 45% said Democrats.

The survey also showed that the gap between Latinos identifying as Democrats and those identifying as Republicans has widened over the last few years. In 2008, 65% of Latino registered voters surveyed by Pew identified themselves as Democrats while 26% identified as Republicans. Now, the Democratic share has risen to 67% while the GOP share has dropped to 20% ? a finding that could be explained by increased registration among foreign-born Latinos, who lean more strongly to Democrats than do the native-born.

Pew estimates that 21.7 million Latinos will be eligible to vote in 2012 ? up 2 million from 2008.

The poll also indicated that many Latinos do not know that deportations have risen under Obama's watch. Among native-born Latinos, only 25% said they thought deportations were higher under Obama than under George W. Bush, while 44% said the records of the two were about the same.

Illegal residents were much more likely to be aware that deportations have risen. They, of course, can't vote.

The survey was based on land-line and cellphone interviews of with 1,220 Latino adults, including 557 registered voters, with interviews done in both English and Spanish. The margin of error for the full sample is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Europe debt crisis top story of 2011

  • In this July 18, 2011 photo, specialist William Krumm works at his post on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. World stock markets climbed Friday, July 22, 2011, as investors signaled their approval of a massive new bailout plan for Greece and broader measures to tackle the continent's debt problems.

NEW YORK -- Europe took the financial world on a stomach-churning ride in 2011.

The rising threat of default by heavily indebted European countries spread fear across financial markets and weighed on economies worldwide. As the year came to a close, banks and investors nervously watched Europe's political and financial leaders scramble to prevent the 17-nation eurozone from breaking apart.

Several of the other biggest business stories of the year highlighted the global economy's linkages: A British phone-hacking scandal shook the foundations of Rupert Murdoch's U.S.-based media empire; a nuclear disaster in Japan stymied auto plants in the U.S. and beyond; and the price of gasoline surged because of unrest in the Middle East and growing demand in Asia and Latin America.

In the U.S., political squabbling led to the first credit downgrade for government debt, the economy suffered its fourth straight disappointing year and Apple founder Steve Jobs died.

The European financial crisis was chosen as the top business story of the year by business editors at The Associated Press. The sluggish U.S. economy came in second, followed by the death of Jobs.

1 EUROPEAN FINANCIAL CRISIS

The government-debt crunch rattled Europe's financial system and weighed on the global economy. Portugal became the third European country, after Greece and Ireland the year before, to require a bailout as its borrowing costs soared. And investors grew worried that countries with much larger debts, such as Spain and Italy, would also need help.

Financial markets were volatile all year as hopes rose and then were dashed that forceful steps would be taken to prevent the financial crisis from becoming Europe's version of the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers, which triggered a global financial panic and deepened the Great Recession.

Banks worried that they or their partners wouldn't be able to cover losses if governments defaulted, so they cut back on lending. European governments, facing ever higher borrowing costs, reined in spending -- a policy response that is expected to stunt much-needed economic growth. Analysts estimate the slowdown in Europe, America's No. 1 trading partner, will cut U.S. economic growth next year.

2 BAD U.S. ECONOMY: YEAR 4

The Great Recession may have ended, but the economic recovery continued to disappoint. For the first six months of the year, the economy grew at an annual rate of just 0.9 percent. Growth improved to a 2 percent rate in the third quarter and a 3 percent growth rate is forecast for the fourth quarter.

Still, 21/2 years after economists say the recession ended, 25 million people remain unemployed or unable to find full-time work. The unemployment rate fell from 9 percent in October to 8.6 percent in November, providing a hopeful sign. Yet the housing market remained burdened by foreclosures and falling prices in many metropolitan areas. How to fix the economy became the top campaign issue for Republican presidential contenders.

3 STEVE JOBS DIES

The college dropout who helped popularize the personal computer and created the iPod, iPhone and iPad, died on Oct. 5. That was two months after Apple Inc., which Jobs started in a Silicon Valley garage in 1976, briefly surpassed Exxon Mobil Corp. as the most valuable publicly traded company in the world.

Jobs cultivated a countercultural sensibility and a minimalist design ethic. He rolled out one sensational product after another, even during the recession and as his health was failing. He first helped change computers from a geeky hobbyist's obsession to a necessity of modern life. In recent years, he upended the music business with the iPod and iTunes, transformed the smart phone market with the iPhone and created the tablet market with the iPad.

4 THE U.S. CREDIT DOWNGRADE

The inability of political leaders to come up with a long-term plan to reduce the federal budget deficit led the credit rating agency Standard & Poor's to take away Uncle Sam's sterling AAA credit rating for the first time. The political bickering enraged voters, spooked investors and led to the lowest consumer confidence level of the year. But the nation's long-term borrowing costs fell after the crisis. The reason: U.S. debt still looks safer to investors than almost everything else, especially European debt.

5 RUPERT MURDOCH AND THE HACKING SCANDAL

The man whose worldwide media empire thrives on covering scandal became the center of a dramatic one. A British tabloid newspaper owned by Murdoch's News Corp., which also owns Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, hacked the phone of a murdered schoolgirl. Murdoch was not charged with a crime, but an investigation by British authorities raised questions about Murdoch's ability to run his worldwide media empire. News Corp. fired several executives and closed the newspaper at the center of the scandal, the News of the World.

6 JAPAN EARTHQUAKE

An earthquake and tsunami that crippled the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear reactor, owned by Tokyo Electric Power Co., cut off supplies of crucial Japanese parts and idled factories thousands of miles away. Auto companies, especially Toyota and Honda, were hit hardest. Inventory of certain models, especially hybrids, fell short at dealerships, reducing sales and sending retail prices higher. The worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl led countries around the world to reconsider nuclear power. Germany decided to abandon nuclear by 2022.

7 GASOLINE PRICES HIT ANNUAL RECORD

The retail price of gasoline averaged $3.53 per gallon for the year, eclipsing the 2008 record of $3.24 per gallon. Americans drove less and switched to more fuel- efficient cars, but it wasn't enough to offset the higher prices. A bigger percentage of household income went into the gas tank in 2011 than any year since 1981. Economists say the high prices shaved half a percentage point off U.S. economic growth.

8 SOCIAL MEDIA IPOs TAKE OFF

Shares of the business social networking site LinkedIn more than doubled when it went public in May, recalling the froth of the dot-com boom. Linked- In was followed by large IPOs from online radio company Pandora Media, online discount site Groupon and social gaming site Zynga. But the market is treacherous: shares of Pandora, Groupon and Zynga all traded below their offering prices soon after they were listed. Market anticipation is high for a Facebook IPO in 2012.

9 OCCUPY WALL STREET

On Sept. 17, several hundred protesters gathered at a small plaza about a block from the New York Stock Exchange. They slept in tents, ate donated meals and protested income inequality and the influence of money in politics. The movement inspired protesters around the world who camped in city centers and business hubs to complain about unemployment, CEO pay and a decline in upward social mobility.

10 THE DOWNFALL OF MF GLOBAL AND JON CORZINE

The former governor, senator and co-chairman of Goldman Sachs lost control of a small brokerage firm he agreed to run in 2010. Saddled with huge debt and risky bets on European bonds, MF Global was forced to file for bankruptcy protection on Halloween after trading partners and investors got spooked. It was soon discovered that $1.2 billion in customer money was missing. Corzine told Congress he had no idea where the money went.

Ron Paul camp fires back at ex-aide over column on Israel, gays

The Ron Paul camp is dismissing a scathing personal account published Monday by former longtime Paul aide Eric Dondero, who paints the Texas congressman as "intolerant" of Spanish speakers, anti-Israel and anti-Israeli, personally uncomfortable around homosexuals, and "out of touch" with black and Hispanic culture -- among other controversial claims.

"Eric Dondero is a disgruntled former staffer who was fired for performance issues," Paul spokesman Jesse Benton said in an emailed response to Hotsheet responding to the column. "He has zero credibility and should not be taken seriously."

In the piece published by RightWingNews.com, Dondero writes that he is attempting to "set the record straight" about allegations that Paul - who has lately been fending off criticism about a controversial newsletter published under his name 20 years ago that contained racist language - is a racist, homophobic, or an anti-Semite.

Full CBSNews.com coverage: Election 2012

"Is Ron Paul a 'racist.' In short, No. I worked for the man for 12 years, pretty consistently. I never heard a racist word expressed towards Blacks or Jews come out of his mouth," writes Dondero, who worked for Paul since the late 1980s, serving as both a campaign operative and, from the late 1990s until 2003, as a congressional aide.

But Dondero also makes claims in the article that are likely to spark more controversy about the candidate, who has been rising in the polls for the Republican nomination, both in Iowa and nationwide.

Of U.S. involvement in World War II, he says Paul "strenuously does not believe the United States had any business getting involved in fighting Hitler in WWII. He expressed to me countless times, that 'saving the Jews,' was absolutely none of our business."

"Is Ron Paul an Anti-Semite? Absolutely No. As a Jew, (half on my mother's side), I can categorically say that I never heard anything out of his mouth, in hundreds of speeches I listened too over the years, or in my personal presence that could be called, 'Anti-Semite.' No slurs. No derogatory remarks," Dondero writes.

Still, on the topic of Israel, Dondero says Paul is "most certainly Anti-Israel, and Anti-Israeli in general. He wishes the Israeli state did not exist at all. He expressed this to me numerous times in our private conversations."

He also detailed a story in which Paul refused to use a homosexual man's bathroom, instead opting to use a public restroom in a fast food restaurant.

"He is not all bigoted towards homosexuals," Dondero writes. "He supports their rights to do whatever they please in their private lives. He is however, personally uncomfortable around homosexuals, no different from a lot of older folks of his era."

Moreover, Dondero posited that while Paul is not racist, he knew him as "'out of touch,' with both Hispanic and Black culture[s]."

When reached on the phone, Dondero categorically denied having been fired by Paul: "I dispute that vehemently," he told Hotsheet. "I'll take him to court over that if that's what he's saying."

Dondero says he resigned in 2003 after going "back and forth" with Paul about it for about six months. "Some days it was like he didn't want me to resign" while other days he did not want to resign. Ultimately, Dondero said it was his differences with Paul over his Iraq policy that led him to quit. (The Paul campaign did not respond to a request for comment on this claim.)

This is not the first time the former staffer has publicly gone after Paul. In 2007, he challenged Paul for his congressional seat. Then, as now, Paul's team said Dondero had been fired and described him as a disgruntled former staffer - as well as "looney-tunes."

The former Paul staffer says he penned his Monday column because the media was misrepresenting the story.

"I'm speaking out about what I saw as his employee - from my perspective. People are getting a lot of things wrong on both sides," he said.

Dondero also told Hotsheet that Paul had a history of liking to "pal around" with racists and that, while working for the congressman, had "been to a couple really far out events with him" where racists would likely be present.

"Sometimes he doesn't even realize that they're racist and everybody on staff just cringes," Dondero said.

In an interview with the New York Times that was published Monday, Paul said he "wouldn't be happy" if anti-Jewish or antiblack people were volunteering on his behalf. But, he said, he would not disavow their support.

"If they want to endorse me, they're endorsing what I do or say -- it has nothing to do with endorsing what they say," Paul told the Times.

The Times story cites several far-right groups - the ranks of which include some "white supremacists, survivalists and anti-Zionists" - who have rallied around Paul, and argues that "a look at the trajectory of Mr. Paul's career shows that he and his closest political allies either wittingly or unwittingly courted disaffected white voters with extreme views as they sought to forge a movement from the nether region of American politics."

Paul, who has said previously that he would not have voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (although he says he supports its intent), says his willingness to receive support from extremists is "incidental."

"I'll go to anybody who I think I can convert to change their viewpoints -- so that would be to me incidental," he told the Times. "I'm always looking at converting people to look at liberty the way I do."

In recent weeks, Paul has been questioned about his affiliation with a series of racially derogatory newsletters that appeared under his name in the 1980s and 1990s.

Paul has reiterated that he did not write the newsletters, saying the controversial comments "are not mine and do not represent what I believe or have ever believed."

Sports: 'Melo makes Knicks merry in NBA opener

NEW YORK ? Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks know it will never be easy against the Celtics.

Not to beat them in one game, and certainly not to beat them for a division title.

But pulling out the kind of nail-biter that's long gone Boston's way in this rivalry only reinforced the Knicks' belief that they can do it ? and even the Celtics see a difference.

Anthony scored 37 points, including a pair of free throws with the game tied and 16 seconds left, and New York survived a seesaw season opener Sunday to edge the Celtics, 106-104.

"Most importantly for us, as a new team, we showed something," Anthony said. "We came together as a team. Even when we got down, there wasn't no frowns. Nobody was down. Mentally, everybody was still up about it, and we willed our way to this win."

Amare Stoudemire added 21 points and Toney Douglas had 19 for the Knicks, who led by 17 in the first half, trailed by 10 in the fourth quarter, then pulled out a thrilling Christmas victory in the delayed opener to the 2011-12 season.

Rajon Rondo had 31 points and 13 assists, nearly leading the Celtics back without an injured Paul Pierce. But Kevin Garnett missed a jumper just before the buzzer, the kind of shot Boston always seems to make against the Knicks.

"They seem to have a little swag and confidence behind them," Garnett said. "It's good for the city. It's good for the Knicks. I'm going to see how consistent they are with that, but for the most part, Carmelo played really well."

Brandon Bass had 20 points and 11 rebounds in his Celtics debut, and Ray Allen added 20 points.

Garnett finished with 15 points. He and Allen had a sleepy Christmas start, with Rondo keeping the Celtics in the game until they got going in the second half.

"I thought we were as soft as you could be in the first quarter, and then I thought we joined in to the 2011-12 season, and from that point on, I was pretty happy with the way we played," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought we competed well."

But it wasn't enough against the Knicks, who withstood a costly knee injury to first-round pick Iman Shumpert to beat the team that swept them out of the first round of last season's playoffs. Shumpert will miss two to four weeks with a sprained right knee ligament.

Pierce has a bruised right heel but hopes he can return Tuesday when the Celtics visit the Miami Heat.

Even without him, the Celtics fought back to tie it at 69 on Rondo's layup midway through the third quarter. They surged ahead by eight going into the final period after Bass scored the final six points, then extended it to 89-79 on Bass' jumper to open the fourth.

Anthony, who scored 20 in the fourth, tied the game at 100 on a 3-pointer with 3:25 to play. It stayed tight until he was fouled on a drive with 16.3 seconds left, making both for a 106-104 lead. Rondo grabbed the rebound of Marquis Daniels' potential go-ahead 3-pointer to give the Celtics a final chance, but Garnett was off on his jumper, then appeared to shove the Knicks' Bill Walker away.

Coming off their first winning season in a decade, the Knicks added a defensive presence by signing Tyson Chandler away from the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks and have loftier expectations than they've seen in years. The original NBA schedule had them opening against Miami, but instead they got a chance to see if they've closed the gap against Boston.

"I think we wanted to come out and set the tone early," Stoudemire said. "It's a long year, but this game was very important for us to get off to a great start."

Though the Celtics won all eight meetings last season, the Knicks have been listed some places as the favorites in the Atlantic Division, which the Celtics have ruled since their Big Three came together in 2007.

"Everybody knows how optimism kicks in before the season starts, but then once reality sets in after the first month of the season, we'll see," Pierce said before the game. "But it's definitely a possibility. I mean, they have the talent, but we have the talent, too."

Prostate Cancer Test Still Holds Value: UC Health Urologist Addresses Common Myths About the Disease

Earlier this year, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force announced recommendations that surprised the medical community: Healthy men should no longer have the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test to screen for prostate cancer. An article published in the Dec. 6, 2011, issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine concluded that PSA tests resulted in little or no reduction in the number of prostate cancer deaths.?

Local urologists?including Nilesh Patil, MD?say encouraging men to avoid the test all together may result in men dying unnecessarily, particularly for those in increased risk categories.?

"There has been a 40 percent decline in prostate cancer-related deaths since the PSA test was introduced,? says Patil, an assistant professor at the UC College of Medicine and UC Health physician. "The test could be improved, but it can provide important clues that prostate cancer may be developing. If the patient waits until he has symptoms, the cancer may have advanced to a less treatable stage.??

The National Cancer Institute estimates that 240,890 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 33,720 will die from the disease in 2011. Here, Patil addresses some of the common myths about prostate cancer.

MYTH: If I don?t have symptoms, I don?t need to have a check up or a blood test.

Most localized or early prostate cancers are asymptomatic. Prostate cancers arise from the periphery of the prostate, hence they are asymptomatic. If you are having symptoms of prostate cancer, then more likely than not, you are not going to be cured of prostate cancer as it will have been detected in an advanced stage.

MYTH: If you have surgical treatment of prostate cancer, you will be incontinent, i.e. leak urine.

Patil: Surgical treatment of prostate cancer, removes the prostate, not the control mechanism of urinary control. ?Most men are completely continent after surgery, when they relearn the use of the external sphincter, a muscle that controls leakage of urine. With current available modalities of surgery and technology (robotic) and the vision and precision with which these structures are preserved over 96 percent of men undergoing surgery are completely continent.

MYTH: If you have surgery, you will be impotent, i.e. lose sexual function

Patil: Sexual function of an individual is based on the pre-operative sexual function, stage and extent of cancer and the surgical procedure one undergoes. Broadly speaking there are two nerves in very close proximity to the prostate which are responsible for the sexual function of the men. If these nerves are spared and if an individual is young, the recovery of sexual function is very good. These nerves are spared in low grade and low volume cancer. Hence earlier detection will allow for sparing of these nerves and better recovery of sexual function post operatively.

MYTH: Prostate biopsy is a painful procedure.

Patil: Prostate biopsy is not a painful ?procedure Typically it is done as an office procedure and when done appropriately it is pain free. A nerve block is given and sample tissues are taken from the prostate. But the procedure requires a probe in the rectum which is uncomfortable, not pain inducing.

MYTH: If your PSA is normal, you don?t have prostate cancer:

Patil: The suspicion of prostate cancer is based on a digital rectal examination and a blood test (PSA). It is the combination of these tests that determine if you need a prostate biopsy. If there is one thing we know from the prostate cancer prevention trials, it is the fact that there is no range of PSA that rules out prostate cancer. Even people with PSA < 2 ng/ml can have prostate cancer.

? Patil offers a catheter-less robotic prostate cancer surgery that eliminates the need for a penile catheter post-surgery. Learn more about the procedure here.?

Simon Cowell picks up £27m in Sony Music deal

 Simon Cowell

Syco?s accounts provide the first insight into the structure of the relationship between Simon Cowell and Sony. Photograph: Rex Features

Simon Cowell made ?27m as part of the deal to create a new entertainment joint venture with Sony Music, according to documents filed at Companies House.

Syco Entertainment was formed in 2010 out of a deal that saw the music mogul win back a share of formats such as The X Factor and ? Got Talent from Sony, having been forced to hand the rights to the record label over in 2005 after Simon Fuller, the tycoon behind Pop Idol, brought a copyright infringement claim.

For his 50% stake in Syco, Cowell contributed his company Maidmetal. In return, the music mogul was paid ?26,754,967, according to Syco's first annual accounts, for the 12 months up to 31 March this year. Sony part paid for its 50% stake in the company with ?31,125,033 in cash.

The record company also handed over Simco, the production company behind The X Factor that Cowell sold in 2005, and another former Cowell company, Ronagold, which was initially founded as the home of Pop Idol stars Gareth Gates and Will Young.

Syco's accounts provide the first insight into the structure of the relationship between Cowell and Sony. The joint venture is described as a non-trading holding company, with four subsidiaries, each focusing on different areas of the entertainment industry.

Simco is the television subsidiary of the business, with its activities described as "TV programme format creation and production". Maidmetal is the publishing arm, focusing on "music publishing, developing talent and intellectual property in the entertainment industry". Ronagold is described as providing "record production and promotion", while a fourth company, Syco Touring, as its name suggests, runs Cowell's artists' tours.

Simco, which produces Cowell's programmes, including gameshow Red or Black?, recorded revenues of ?28m in the year to 31 March, according to newly filed accounts.

The figure is down on the ?33m turnover Simco recorded over the same period in 2010, but meaningful comparisons are difficult because during that year the company changed its reporting date, as well writing off nearly ?56m that had been due from Sony.

Simco's 2011 accounts show the company made pre-tax profits of ?13.7m on its ?28m turnover. The accounts cover the period before The X Factor launched in the US, and record that only 11% of turnover, or ?3.2m, came from the country. But the company noted that Fox has commissioned a second season of the show, adding: "This expansion offers a major opportunity for the future growth of the company."

The number of staff employed by Simco nearly doubled, from eight to 15, as a result of "future expansion plans". Over the 12 months the company employed an average of 13 employees, costing ?6,712,761 ? or an average of just more than ?500,000 per staff member.

What Was the Senate Thinking with a Two-Month Tax Cut? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Regardless of political pressure from President Barack Obama, the House Republicans did the right thing by scuttling the Senate bill allowing a two-month extension on lower payroll taxes.

Obama called on Wednesday House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to urge him to summons the House back into session to agree with the Senate bill that was passed on Saturday. Reuters reports that Boehner is under incredible pressure from the White House, the press and a few members of his own conference to agree with the two-month proposal to will keep payroll taxes from rising, but that is bad legislating.

By continuing the lower tax withholding for only two months, Congress potentially risks complicating the tax filing process for every single employer in the country -- something that is bound to cause enormous confusion and error. Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Fla., made that point during a late night meeting of the House Rules Committee on Tuesday. His plea fell upon deaf ears of his Democratic colleagues, but was sufficient to gather the unanimous support of the Republican majority.

The inability of the Senate to find an acceptable compromise for the full-year payroll tax cut extension is further proof that this Congress is irreparably broken. Divided government can work, but it requires compromise -- and that's a quality in very short supply this year.

Tea Party Republicans have been obstructionists to the point of becoming a nuisance. They have crippled Boehner's hand in key negotiations because they have not learned to compromise. Democrats are playing a game with the economy and the livelihood of every working American family. To even consider a two month extension was ridiculous. There is no economic certainty in such a move. It will not spur job creation and sends a perilous message to business. That's the last thing we need right now.

Article 2, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution empowers the president to order Congress (or any one House of Congress) back into session. Obama should do this immediately, demanding that the Senate reconvene within 24 hours for the purpose of resolving the tax issue. If they are unable to appoint conferees, then both Houses should immediately consider a new bill that preserves the tax cuts. A two month extension is bad for everyone involved.

Baseball Prospectus News: Introducing the Transactions Browser by Bradley Ankrom

December 23, 2011

by Bradley Ankrom

When you grow up in a military family, change can sometimes feel like the only consistent thing in your life. For me, while bouncing between stations up and down the Eastern Seaboard for much of the '90s, consistency also came in the form of my regular Wednesday routine where, no matter what part of the country I was standing in, I was able to track down a newspaper stand, gas station, or commissary that carried Baseball Weekly (renamed Sports Weekly when they added football to their coverage in 2002). After reading Bob Nightengale?s latest and checking my position in the Clubhouse Fantasy League, I usually found my way to the team-by-team transactions, where the story of a given team?s season could be told in unbiased stock language. That?s where my fascination with roster mechanics began and, based upon the comment threads of our Transaction Analysis articles, I?m guessing many of you share that same interest.

That?s why I?m pleased as Punch (but not as smug) to unveil Baseball Prospectus? new Transactions page. Let?s take a look around, shall we?

The latest 50 league transactions greet you as the home page loads for the first time. Right away, you?ll notice that instead of grouping all of a team?s transactions into a single row, we?ve broken each player out into separate listings, making it easy to quickly pick out specific players. To see all of a player's transactions, simply click on his name in the text string. If you're interested in his player card, click the headshot. Similarly, all of a team's transactions can be viewed by clicking on the team name in the text string, and clicking on the logo will open up that team's audit page. Some rows feature an ?Analysis? link, which offers direct access to the Transaction Analysis article that discusses the move.

Above the listings is a search form that allows you to browse transactions by any combination of player, team, and date range. For example, if you?re interested in the exact dates that Cliff Lee was placed on and activated from the disabled list in April 2010, you can enter his name into the Player Name field and specify a date range of 4/1/2010 to 4/30/2010, which returns the following:

To see the rest of Lee?s transactions, simply clear the date range and resubmit:

If you?re only concerned with the dates Lee has been traded and don?t care about his injury or free agency history, clicking the blue ?Advanced Search? link next to the search button will give you myriad ways to narrow the scope of your search, including the ability to limit results to specific transaction types:

Submitting that query will return only the three records for his trades to Philadelphia, Seattle, and Texas:

The rest of the options displayed in the Advanced Search form allow you to narrow your search by league, team, general manager, injury, transaction type, and player age at the time of the transaction. Selecting a second league, team, or general manager enables you to find all of the trades made between the specified entities:

Next to the date fields in the Advanced Search form, you have the option to change the kinds of dates that are returned in your query. By default, the transaction date?the date the move is announced?is used, but you can select ?Use Effective/Retroactive Dates? to return, for example, the date Joe Mauer?s placement on the disabled list is retroactive to.

You probably noticed in the screen shot of Cliff Lee?s trades that the infamous Bartolo Colon-for-the-farm move, which sent Lee, Brandon Phillips, and Grady Sizemore from Montreal to Cleveland in July 2002, was nowhere to be found. Currently, our transaction logs only go back as far as January 2009, the earliest MLBAM makes them available. However, you can expect more historical years to be added over the next few weeks.

Aside from adding historical seasons, what features or improvements would you like to see? Let us know in the comments or feel free to send me a note with your thoughts.?

Autodesk Inventor Helps Bring Greater Energy Efficiency for Building Retrofits

Green Structures Speeds Development of Innovative Heat Recovery System

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has named UK-based Green Structures as Autodesk Inventor of the Month for December 2011, citing the company?s use of Autodesk Inventor software and a range of other Autodesk Digital Prototyping technology in transforming the way energy systems are planned, designed, constructed, maintained and operated within the built environment.

?With access to the same professional tools as some of the United Kingdom?s largest manufacturers, we can further strengthen the quality and professionalism of our design process.?

As a member of the Autodesk Clean Tech Partner Program ? an initiative that provides Autodesk Digital Prototyping software to emerging and established clean tech companies for a small fee ? Green Structures has rapidly created award-winning energy efficiency systems, particularly in the areas known as passive heat recovery ventilation and thermal energy storage.

The firm?s latest innovation, a heat recovery ventilation system called Ventive, works with existing chimneys to channel air and heat. This system contrasts with current mechanical heat recovery ventilation systems, which require that complex ductwork be installed throughout an entire building. Ventive can be installed in less than 30 minutes, providing a far faster and less expensive alternative for retrofitting buildings with the latest green technologies.

With help from the Autodesk Clean Tech Partner Program, Green Structures was able to upgrade its design capabilities to include Autodesk Inventor, as well as Autodesk Ecotect Analysis software, Autodesk Simulation Multiphysics software and Autodesk Revit Architecture software. Access to Autodesk Digital Prototyping technology provided a more controlled environment to test designs, helping to make the design process less costly, faster and with less guesswork.

?The Autodesk Clean Tech Partner Program provides us with world-class software,? said Thomas Lipinski, founder, managing director and CTO of Green Structures. ?With access to the same professional tools as some of the United Kingdom?s largest manufacturers, we can further strengthen the quality and professionalism of our design process.?

Digital Prototyping Saves Time and Money

By using Autodesk Digital Prototyping software, Green Structures can better accelerate the prototyping process for its Ventive heat recovery ventilation system. The company used Autodesk Simulation software, for example, to run wind tunnel tests and heat transfer modeling, before carrying out appropriate redesigns. Since wind tunnel simulations in a professional facility cost approximately $1,550 (?1,000) per day, Green Structures significantly reduced the costs of fine-tuning its product by performing these tests digitally. Autodesk reseller, Envisage, helped provide training and support to enable Green Structures to more quickly implement Autodesk Digital Prototyping software in the design process.

?Autodesk Digital Prototyping technology is helping Green Structures save time and money as it brings its products to the marketplace,? said Robert ?Buzz? Kross, senior vice president, Manufacturing Industry Group at Autodesk. ?By gaining key insights before anything has been built, the company can more effectively validate and optimize its innovative clean tech solutions.?

Mike Green: Angel Investing in Startups Stimulates Job Growth

Will the next Mark Zuckerberg please stand up?

What are the odds that another young student at a prestigious university will develop an Internet social platform to solve a campus problem, which will ultimately scale to become a national phenomenon? Ari Winkleman may have done exactly that. The Drexel University senior is the Founder and CEO of Involvio, a new social management platform that empowers students to know what's going on across campus anytime, anywhere.

Winkleman is just one of thousands of new high-growth entrepreneurs pitching their ideas to angel investors and venture capitalists at events across America designed to connect entrepreneurs and investors. Winkleman's pitch impressed judges at the Early Stage East pitch competition in Baltimore, Md., on Dec. 14, where Daymond John (ABC's "Shark Tank" and founder of FUBU) served as moderator. Nearly 30 entrepreneurs were given an opportunity to make their pitch for seed and early stage capital ranging from a couple hundred thousand dollars up to $2.5 million.

In the fast-paced world of innovation, angel investors and VCs are starting to team up to fuel seed and early stage companies that have the capacity to generate significant revenues in a very short period of time. The result of such speed is job growth.

According to the Kauffman Foundation, all net new jobs in America since 1980 are the result of companies five years old and younger. The fuel driving the engine of innovation is angel investing.

In the first half of 2011, angel investors alone, without venture capital, poured nearly $9 billion into U.S. companies. About 39 percent of it targeted seed and early stage ventures produced by high-growth entrepreneurs, up 26 percent from the same time period in 2010, according to the Wall Street Journal. The inherent outcome of such investment is job growth.

Job growth is a major issue in Black America, which ironically is severely under-represented in tech entrepreneurship and angel investing, the dynamic duo that produces jobs and wealth across America. Tim Reese is a co-founder of the Minority Angel Investor Network and was present at the Early Stage East competition. He told Black Enterprise magazine he's optimistic about opportunities for startup companies seeking investment in 2012.

"There was a lot of money on the sidelines because investors have been selective the last three years," Reese said. "That money is now in play. This is an active time for venture capital for early stage companies, though it is not at the same level as in 1999. Individual angel investors and institutional angel groups are collaborating with venture capitalists."

A historic event seeking to galvanize the power of Black angel capital that's still sitting on the sidelines was produced in mid-November. A "Gathering of Angels" took place at Rutgers Business School, where more than 100 business leaders, investors and entrepreneurs came together to discuss the challenges in attracting Black high net worth individuals into the active angel space. The "gathering," produced by the collaboration of The America21 Project and The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (CUEED), also featured 13 high-growth minority entrepreneurs pitching to a panel of judges and investors.

The showcase of quality deal flow was compelling enough to attract immediate engagement between investors and eight of the startups that pitched, including four female-led companies.

Andres Montgomery was one of the minority startup founders pitching at Rutgers. He is the CEO of Dreem Digital, an award-winning digital education company in Salem, Ore. Montgomery was recruited after his pitch by Early Stage East principal Marc Mathis, who invited him to the ESE showcase in Baltimore. Montgomery, a former Microsoft employee seeking $2.5 million to scale his company, credits The America21 Project for connecting him to a variety of potential investors across the country with which he is currently in negotiations.

Despite explosive growth in the numbers of incubators, accelerators and tech entrepreneurs, along with billions of dollars invested each year to support innovation, this activity is virtually missing across the board in economically disconnected Black and urban sectors of society. Since angel investing is largely geographic, due to investors getting personally involved with companies to help them grow (the mantra is "angel money doesn't travel"), tech entrepreneurs living in communities where high net worth individuals elect not to engage in the angel space are forced to spend their time and money developing relationships and seeking access to capital elsewhere. The typical result is jobs are created where funding is found. For Black America, that equation equals zero job growth.

The nation received some good news recently as unemployment figures dipped. But, America's collective sigh of relief wasn't being heard in Black and urban America, where high unemployment remains a constant plague. Apparently, the angelic investment remedy that's catching on like wildfire across the nation has yet to see many Black high net worth individuals get involved in the funding of high-growth startups. Additionally, entrepreneurship as an active part of campus culture at universities like Stanford, Harvard, MIT and others, hasn't caught on with the vast majority of HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).

The next Mark Zuckerberg will likely emerge from environments that foster, nurture and invest in the innovative spirit of its talented entrepreneurs. It is incumbent upon every community to ensure it plants the seeds of entrepreneurship, along with concerned angels investing in nourishing the crop of talented innovators to grow the jobs we desperately need.

China, Japan leaders to meet amid North Korea angst (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Leaders from China and Japan will likely agree to work together to help maintain stability on the Korean peninsula following the death of North Korean ruler Kim Jong-il when they meet next week, but anything more than platitudes will be hard to come by.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda will meet President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao in Beijing during a two-day trip from Sunday as the world waits to see where North Korea is headed under Kim Jong-un, the youngest son of the destitute nuclear state's late leader.

Noda's visit to China, North Korea's biggest backer, was arranged before Kim Jong-il's death was announced by the unpredictable hermit state on Monday.

"Instability on the peninsula would be in nobody's interest," said Sun Cheng, professor of Japanese studies at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing.

"The six-party talks are likely to be on hold for some time, and so is any progress on the North Korean nuclear issue, but there'll be a consensus between China and Japan -- as well as the United States, South Korea and Russia -- on preserving stability on the Korean peninsula."

The six-party denuclearization talks, involving the two Koreas, the United States, China, Japan and Russia, broke down in 2008 and United Nations inspectors were expelled from North Korea in 2009.

Ensuring stability and establishing working relations with the impoverished nation is especially important for Japan, which is well within range of North Korea's long-range missiles and wants Pyongyang to resolve the emotive issue of the fate of Japanese citizens kidnapped to help train spies decades ago.

"It goes without saying that China can play an important role in solving abduction issues. Naturally, we will be working hard on China (to help settle the problem)," Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba told reporters on Thursday.

THE ROAD TO PYONGYANG

Experts agree China has the biggest role to play in efforts to keep North Korea on an even keel. Japan's ability to act is limited by the feud over the abductees and historical animosity born of Tokyo's 1910-1945 colonization of the Korean peninsula.

"The road to Pyongyang is through Beijing right now," said Richard Samuels, director of the MIT-Japan Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"I'm sure the Japanese side will implore the Chinese side to use their good offices to help North Korea find a way to be more Burmese," he said, referring to Myanmar, whose new civilian government has pledged to re-engage with the world community.

Promises of any concrete steps on North Korea, however, are unlikely to emerge from the Sino-Japanese summit.

"Of course they will make comments like 'We will maintain close communication for the sake of the peninsula's stability' but not much more than that," said Hiroko Maeda, a research fellow at PHP Institute's Center for International and Strategic Studies in Tokyo.

"No one knows how the situation in the North will develop."

North Korean worries aside, Noda and Chinese leaders are expected to try to improve ties between the world's second- and third-largest economies, strained by a maritime dispute last year that chilled relations deeply.

But major breakthroughs appear unlikely.

"THREE FEET OF ICE"

"Overall, Noda's visit will be an opportunity to improve relations. But we should not have excessive expectations," said Huang Dahui, professor specializing in Sino-Japanese relations at Renmin University in Beijing.

"In Sino-Japanese relations we say that it takes more than one cold day for three feet of ice to form ... We can't expect that one visit will give relations a total remake."

Sino-Japanese ties deteriorated last year when Japan detained a Chinese skipper whose trawler collided with Japanese patrol boats near a chain of disputed islands in the East China Sea. The area is potentially rich in gas and oil reserves.

The leaders are expected to discuss ways to restart stalled talks on the proposed joint development of gas fields in the East China Sea and to achieve an early start of negotiations for three-way free trade talks among Japan, China and South Korea.

On the financial front, Japan is in talks to buy Chinese government debt to strengthen economic ties, and Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi said this week the matter needs to be addressed at the summit meetings.

World's shortest woman wants to be Bollywood star (AP)

NAGPUR, India ? A high school student in central India was recognized as the world's shortest woman by Guinness World Records on Friday as she turned 18 and said she hopes to earn a degree and make it in Bollywood.

Jyoti Amge stood just 62.8 centimeters (24.7 inches) tall ? shorter than the average 2-year-old ? when Guinness representatives visiting from London measured her at a ceremony attended by about 30 relatives and friends in the town of Nagpur, in Maharashtra state.

A teary-eyed Amge, dressed in one of her finest saris, called the honor an "extra birthday present" and said she felt grateful for being small, as it had brought her recognition. After receiving a plaque, she and her guests cut a birthday cake.

"I have put Nagpur on the world map. Now everyone will know where it is," said Amge, who says she dreams of one day becoming a Bollywood film star as well as pursuing a university degree after she finishes high school this year.

"I want to be an actor," she said.

She measured 7 centimeters (2.76 inches) shorter than 22-year-old American Bridgette Jordan, who had held the title since September.

"Jyoti encourages us all to look beyond mere size and to just celebrate our differences," Guinness adjudicator Rob Molloy said.

This was not Amge's first Guinness record. Until Friday she was considered the world's shortest teenager, but in turning 18 qualified for the new title. She has grown less than 1 centimeter (0.4 inch) in the last two years, Guinness said in a statement, and will grow no more due to a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.

Her teenage title brought the chance for multiple Guinness-sponsored trips to Japan and Italy for tours and meetings with other record holders, she said.

The title of shortest woman in history continues to be held by Pauline Musters, who lived in the Netherlands from 1876 to 1895 and stood 61 centimeters (24 inches) tall.

Census shows 1 in 2 people are poor or low-income (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Squeezed by rising living costs, a record number of Americans ? nearly 1 in 2 ? have fallen into poverty or are scraping by on earnings that classify them as low income.

The latest census data depict a middle class that's shrinking as unemployment stays high and the government's safety net frays. The new numbers follow years of stagnating wages for the middle class that have hurt millions of workers and families.

"Safety net programs such as food stamps and tax credits kept poverty from rising even higher in 2010, but for many low-income families with work-related and medical expenses, they are considered too `rich' to qualify," said Sheldon Danziger, a University of Michigan public policy professor who specializes in poverty.

"The reality is that prospects for the poor and the near poor are dismal," he said. "If Congress and the states make further cuts, we can expect the number of poor and low-income families to rise for the next several years."

Congressional Republicans and Democrats are sparring over legislation that would renew a Social Security payroll tax reduction, part of a year-end political showdown over economic priorities that could also trim unemployment benefits, freeze federal pay and reduce entitlement spending.

Robert Rector, a senior research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, questioned whether some people classified as poor or low-income actually suffer material hardship. He said that while safety-net programs have helped many Americans, they have gone too far. He said some people described as poor live in decent-size homes, drive cars and own wide-screen TVs.

"There's no doubt the recession has thrown a lot of people out of work and incomes have fallen," Rector said. "As we come out of recession, it will be important that these programs promote self-sufficiency rather than dependence and encourage people to look for work."

Mayors in 29 cities say more than 1 in 4 people needing emergency food assistance did not receive it. Many formerly middle-class Americans are dropping below the low-income threshold ? roughly $45,000 for a family of four ? because of pay cuts, a forced reduction of work hours or a spouse losing a job.

States in the South and West had the highest shares of low-income families, including Arizona, New Mexico and South Carolina, which have scaled back or eliminated aid programs for the needy. By raw numbers, such families were most numerous in California and Texas, each with more than 1 million.

The struggling Americans include Zenobia Bechtol, 18, in Austin, Texas, who earns minimum wage as a part-time pizza delivery driver. Bechtol and her 7-month-old baby were recently evicted from their bedbug-infested apartment after her boyfriend, an electrician, lost his job in the sluggish economy.

After an 18-month job search, Bechtol's boyfriend now works as a waiter and the family of three is temporarily living with her mother.

"We're paying my mom $200 a month for rent, and after diapers and formula and gas for work, we barely have enough money to spend," said Bechtol, a high school graduate who wants to go to college. "If it weren't for food stamps and other government money for families who need help, we wouldn't have been able to survive."

About 97.3 million Americans fall into a low-income category, commonly defined as those earning between 100 and 199 percent of the poverty level, based on a new supplemental measure by the Census Bureau that is designed to provide a fuller picture of poverty. Together with the 49.1 million who fall below the poverty line and are counted as poor, they number 146.4 million, or 48 percent of the U.S. population. That's up by 4 million from 2009, the earliest numbers for the newly developed poverty gauge.

The new measure of poverty takes into account medical, commuting and other living costs as well as taxes. Doing that pushed the number of people below 200 percent of the poverty level, up from the 104 million, or 1 in 3 Americans, that was officially reported in September.

Kathleen Short, research economist at the Census Bureau, said the number of people who are poor or low income increases to 1 in 2 because of added living costs on middle-class Americans. She described those living below 200 percent of poverty as a broad group, ranging from the poorest poor to those who may have modest amounts of income.

"We do see a bigger percentage of people below 200 percent of poverty than with the official measure," she said. "This is a group that represents the low end of the income distribution."

Broken down by age, children were most likely to be poor or low-income ? about 57 percent ? followed by seniors 65 and over. By race and ethnicity, Hispanics topped the list at 73 percent, followed by blacks, Asians and non-Hispanic whites.

Even by traditional measures, many working families are hurting.

Following the recession that began in late 2007, the share of working families who are low income has risen for three straight years to 31.2 percent, or 10.2 million. That proportion is the highest in at least a decade, up from 27 percent in 2002, according to a new analysis by the Working Poor Families Project and the Population Reference Bureau, a nonprofit research group based in Washington.

Among low-income families, about one-third were considered poor while the remainder ? 6.9 million ? earned income just above the poverty line. Many states phase out eligibility for food stamps, Medicaid, tax credit and other government aid programs for low-income Americans as they approach 200 percent of the poverty level.

The majority of low-income families ? 62 percent ? spent more than one-third of their earnings on housing, surpassing a common guideline for what is considered affordable. By some census surveys, child-care costs consume close to another one-fifth when a mother works.

Paychecks for low-income families are shrinking. The inflation-adjusted average earnings for the bottom 20 percent of families have fallen from $16,788 in 1979 to just under $15,000, and earnings for the next 20 percent have remained flat at $37,000. In contrast, higher-income brackets had significant wage growth since 1979, with earnings for the top 5 percent of families climbing 64 percent to more than $313,000.

A survey of 29 cities conducted by the U.S. Conference of Mayors released Thursday points to a gloomy outlook for those on the lower end of the income scale.

Many mayors cited the challenges of meeting increased demands for food assistance, expressing particular concern about possible cuts to federal programs such as food stamps and WIC, which assists low-income pregnant women and mothers. Unemployment led the list of causes of hunger in cities, followed by poverty, low wages and high housing costs.

Across the 29 cities, about 27 percent of people needing emergency food aid did not receive it. Kansas City, Mo.; Nashville, Tenn.; Sacramento, Calif.; and Trenton, N.J., were among the cities that pointed to increases in the cost of food and declining food donations. Mayor Michael McGinn in Seattle cited an unexpected spike in food requests from immigrants and refugees, particularly from Somalia, Burma and Bhutan.

Among those requesting emergency food assistance, 51 percent were in families, 26 percent were employed, 19 percent were elderly and 11 percent were homeless.

"People who never thought they would need food are in need of help," said Mayor Sly James of Kansas City, Mo., who co-chairs a mayors' task force on hunger and homelessness.
